Following a massive mobilization against the construction of a section of
motorway between Castres and Toulouse last April, a convergence of struggles isforming. A national coalition, La Déroute des Routes, intends to put an end tothese major ecocide projects throughout the territory. ---- France may hold theEuropean record for kilometers of road per inhabitant, but the State andcommunities intend to continue to tar to go straight into the wall faster. A battle waged daily by around fifty local collectives, who have foughtagainst road projects all over France (including those in Castres, Rouen and LesSucs), and united since last year in the national coalition La Déroute desroutes. Together, they carry a moratorium to suspend all road projects, mobilizein support of each other (the coalition was present in Castres and Rouen) andshare the same analysis.Attacking a System NodeWhether it's yet another highway, the bypass of a small town, a new road tracedin the middle of the countryside, all road projects follow the same logic. Whilethey are always presented as a response to local problems of travel and trafficjams, their purpose is in reality quite different. Built against the inhabitants,these projects are part of a global scheme. The goal is to increasingly densifythe freight transport network across France and Europe and open up new spaces,natural and agricultural land, to private land predation. Along with road accesscome ZACs, logistics warehouses and new suburban districts. Thus, the road systemis constantly accelerating the flow of goods, appropriating the commons, divertslocal customs, operates a commodification of territories in defiance of those wholive there, human or not. To block the roads is to attack a node of the system,it is to block upstream all the rotten projects in cascade that their openingwould allow. So the coalition, rich in its diversity, intends to continue thefight and intensify it to rout the roads everywhere.
