Update: Top 5 wins for human rights made possible by your activism IMPACT

Dear friends, This year has seen some incredible human rights victories. Right? In a world where the biggest crises are top of the newsfeed daily, it can be difficult to find the positives. But change is happening every day and your activism is making a difference. As we cross the year’s midway point, we are celebrating the progress we have made together—and making clear that we are ready for what’s next. Check out some of the moments—from legislative change to grassroots mobilization—that made a difference. Your mid-year activism checkup includes 5 big wins:    1. 🇨🇦 With over 35,000 actions taken, our #WelcomeToCanada campaign has effectively ended Canada’s practice of detaining migrants and asylum seekers in provincial jails. Your email and tweets to provincial leaders set off a domino effect resulting in 8 of Canada's 10 provinces standing up for human rights. Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Saskatchewan, and Quebec have all cancelled their immigration detention contracts with the Canada Border Services Agency. 2. 🇯🇵 Japan passed its first ever law on sexual orientation and gender identity to ‘promote understanding’ of LGBT people. The bill needs work, but it is a good start. This progress would not have been possible without 100+ organizations and thousands of individuals supporting the #EqualityActJapan campaign. More than 100,000 of you signed a petition in support of an equality law that we delivered to Japan’s ruling party in 2021. 3. 🇺🇸 The United States made history by suing Edmodo, an online learning company investigated in our campaign, over students’ data privacy. The US Federal Trade Commission took a step to limit the use of children’s data for targeting and behavioral advertising. The proposed $6 million fine came one year after #StudentsNotProducts uncovered how online learning products during the Covid-19 pandemic infringed on children’s privacy. 4. 🇧🇷 The Brazilian state of Mina Gerais and the company Escola Mais took immediate steps to protect students’ privacy on their online learning platforms. The changes came after media and activist attention to #StudentsNotProducts, which found that both websites covertly surveilled children and harvested their personal data. 5. 🇪🇺 240,000+ called for living wages in the European Union to be a fundamental human right. #GoodClothesFairPay, a European Citizens’ Initiative, demanded living wages for workers in the fashion industry. This mobilization by the network of organizations behind this campaign has shone a spotlight on low wages in the garment industry and will be critical to keep up the pressure on the European Union to take action.
