The Mexican director Guillermo del Toro thought of revisiting the adventures of
Pinocchio in a completely personal way and making him an anti-fascist in hisvisionary film, perhaps the most beautiful of those who have dealt with Collodi'stale, Pinocchio (2022), for which received the Academy Award (with MarkGustafson) for Best Animated Feature (2023). ---- Pinocchio is an ironic puppetwho ridicules Mussolini, refuses to wage war, mocks the hierarchs, disobeys thebrutality of authoritarianism ... he is the bearer of an irreducible libertariandissidence. "Disobedience is urgent in the world now. It helps us understand howwe can love each other in our failures, in our defects, in our humanity"(Guillermo del Toro).Del Toro's Pinocchio is completely unique... the narrative construction is instark opposition to the conventions of the animated film industry... the puppetsare elaborated with the Step One technique, those who speak well say stop-motion... i.e. the frames are impressed one at a time... 24 frames per second...as it is known the European television image (PAL) uses 25, while the Americantelevision image (NTSC) uses 29 .97 per second. Starting with Steven Spielberg'sJurassic Park (1993), special effects in cinema have been almost completelyreplaced by computer graphics which destroyed the "artisanal" charm of animatedcinema and founded a new language adapted to the demands of the markets. Thecoming illiteracy of social networks, after all, belongs to those who make alanguage of imbecility.Del Toro's film is based on drawings from Pinocchio (2002) by illustrator anddirector Gris Grimly. Grimly's creative talent is pervaded by a dark melancholythat del Toro brings back to his work and it is no coincidence that Grimly hasrevisited many children's classics in a magical way, such as Tales of Death andDementia (2009) by Edgar Allan Poe, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (2011) or TheTales of the Brothers Grimm (2016)... his figuration of the imaginal of childhoodrests on the dark sides, the shadows, the contours always avoided in publicationsfor young readers .Del Toro writes the screenplay for Pinocchio with Patrick McHale... the chaptersare well intertwined and the whole film is almost a figural rhapsody that gives asense of infinity... 121 minutes of visual inflorescence supported by themagnificent photography of Frank Passingham and from the drumming editing by KenSchretzmann... the music by the French composer Alexandre Desplat (previouslyawarded with an Oscar) is really scarce... to be forgotten. The wireless puppethere embodies a libertarian hymn to life without masters or prophets or guardiansand its aesthetic-ethical divergence rises to the rank of high poetry.Let us try to retrace the cartography of Del Toro's Pinocchio. During the FirstWorld War, bombs from Austro-Hungarian planes fall on the church of a smallItalian village and kill Carlo, the son of the widowed carpenter Geppetto... theboy had found a pine cone and the old man buries it next to his son's grave ...twenty years pass, the pine cone has become a tree where Jiminy CricketSebastian, an intellectual scribbler, has taken up residence. Geppetto is alwaysdrunk, he can't get over the loss of Carlo... after a solemn hangover he cuts thetree, takes it to his house and sketches a puppet. At night, the Spirit of thewoods appears and gives life to the puppet, calling him Pinocchio... he asksSebastian to be his guide in exchange for a wish and will have him write hisautobiography.On the walls of the village the writing reigns: "Believe, obey, fight". ThePodestà is the master of the town and requires Geppetto to send Pinocchio toschool ... but the puppet meets Count Volpe and his monkey, Spazzatura, whoconvince him to sign a contract as the main attraction of their circus. Geppettointerrupts the show... in the turmoil between Geppetto and Count Volpe, Pinocchiofalls in the street and dies hit by the Podestà's van.In the Underworld Pinocchio meets Death (she is the sister of the Spirit of theWood) and tells him that he is not a human being, therefore he is immortal anddestined to return to the realm of the living every time he dies, through thescrolling of time on an hourglass . When he comes back to life, the Podestà wantshim to join the fascist army in view of the war. Geppetto tells Pinocchio that heis not a good boy like Carlo was and is a burden to him... Pinocchio escapes andjoins Count Volpe's circus. Geppetto and Sebastian cross the Strait of Messina toreach the circus and bring Pinocchio home but are swallowed by the Fish-dog.The circus reaches Catania and in the final show Mussolini arrives... Pinocchioand Spazzatura decide to mock the dictator in their musical number... Mussoliniburns down the circus and a fascist officer shoots Pinocchio. Death brings himback to life once more. The Podestà takes the puppet to a fascist training campwhere he becomes friends with Lucignolo, the Podestà's son ... whom his fatherconsiders to be cowardly. The camp is bombed by the Allies... the Podestàmistreats Pinocchio, Candlewick defends him and the Podestà is killed by a bomb.Count Volpe wants to burn Pinocchio to take revenge for his lost circus ...Rubbish rebels against his master and pushes him to the cliff where he falls tohis death. Pinocchio and Garbage end up in the sea and find themselves in thebelly of the Fish-dog with Geppetto and Sebastian. To free Geppetto and hisfriends, Pinocchio blows himself up with a naval mine and kills the Dogfish.In the Underworld, when Pinocchio learns that Geppetto is drowning in the sea, heshatters the hourglass to immediately come back to life and save him, even thoughDeath warns him that he will lose his immortality. Geppetto is rescued andPinocchio dies. The Wood Spirit reappears and tells Pinocchio that his gesture oflove has made him a real child but he can never come back to life. Sebastian thenuses his wish and asks the Spirit of the wood for a last resurrection ofPinocchio. The puppet returns home with his family-commune and they live inhappiness until Geppetto, Sebastian and Spazzatura die of old age. Pinocchiodecides to leave for an imaginary nowhere and Sebastian tells the Black Rabbits,the servants of Death, that perhaps one day Pinocchio could die and prove onceagain that he is a real boy, concluding: "What happens happens, and finally we go".The adventures of Collodi's wooden puppet have inspired different authors...Tolstoy, Disney, Spielberg, Comencini, Benigni, Garrone, Trevi, Zemeckis, delToro... Pinocchio has been defined as Christian, fascist, post-capitalist,anarchist... but Pinocchio is in any case irreconcilable with the powers that tryto disguise him, hide him or harness him in definitions... Pinocchio is witnessto a world that is always reinvented and filled with escape routes from the Landof Toys which ultimately rejects and rebels to all that conformism andhomologation. Pinocchio is a puppet who wants to become a child - which Collodidoes not say like the others -... a child who only wants to be himself! Theconstruction of one's own personality that rejects the norms of knowledge,authority, mythologies, teachings, commanding, obeying... inhumanity is obedienceto everything, humanity is rebellion against everything denies his own subjectivity!Del Toro's Pinocchio rejects the historical legends of leaders, cowards, heroes,martyrs, saints... his tale tears apart all the Hollywood and Japanesepedagogical morals aimed at subjecting and conditioning the wonder and amazementof the childhood imaginary... Pinocchio's pranks arouse the need for roots, theneed to recognize oneself and be recognized. Pinocchio is a builder of situationsthat touch the heart of silence or reproach... he is not afraid to see what hefears, he fights it, opposes it, faces it and it took all the genius ofCollodi-del Toro to try to make it clear that the intelligence of the heart isthe only wound that leads to distinguishing Good from Evil.Del Toro assigns Pinocchio the place-space of the I-Soul and says that there isno ideology other than the search for the self... everyone can find hisPinocchio, not because there is a Pinocchio in everyone, but because Pinocchio isa crumpled page in the depth of the gaze that accompanies one's journey in lifefreed from all concessions, submissions and school sufferings.
