Finally Eni is no longer a personal fixation but is becoming a collective
struggle. Italy's largest and most powerful energy company - indeed, probably themost influential multinational tout court in the world - is no longer dealt withby single people or, at most, local committees and environmental associationsaffected by industrial impacts. Today the six-legged dog is the subject ofjournalistic investigations, acts of disobedience, awareness campaigns. Still toolittle, certainly, to break the climate of silence and complicity that makes Enirise to the center of Italian politics. But it was finally understood once againthat Eni is a matryoshka of claims: from widespread and decentralized energy tothe self-determination of peoples, from the fight against extractivism toenvironmental protection, from the demilitarization of territories to thecreation of imaginaries from below and no longer imposed. The month of May, inthis sense, was particularly emblematic, as a series of particularly significantappointments and opportunities followed one another. The first stage, perhaps themost important, was the assembly held in Rome, in the space occupied by SpinTime, on 9 May. On that occasion, the realities that have been trying to counterthe six-legged dominance for some time gathered, and which, however, have so farmoved in an isolated manner, with the exception of a few and sparsecollaborations. I quote them from memory, with the awareness that I will probablyforget some: Legambiente, Greenpeace, ReCommon, A Sud, Unione degli Studenti,Extinction Rebellion, Fridays For Future, Un ponte per, Fada. Even with the riskof repeating things already known, the meeting was fundamental because it wasagreed on the fact that petty divisions and childish jealousies must be setaside, trying to build a common platform that brings together reports andprotests, popular involvement and institutional pressure. And a map of convergingdates has already been drawn which bodes well for the continuation of thecommitments made. The approach must be rigorously glocal, i.e. local and globaltogether: the impacts of Eni's activities on territories scattered around theworld must always be accompanied by an ability to connect with wider politicaland geopolitical issues, as reiterated the war in Ukraine , which for Italy andthe six-legged dog has become the umpteenth opportunity to ratify the dominationof gas. Without forgetting to dismantle the stubborn greenwashing that companieslike Eni continue to carry out, selling us the gray shit as if it were greenchocolate. A few hours earlier, ReCommon and Greenpeace had actually announced acivil suit against Eni. The proceeding falls within the sphere of so-calledclimate litigation, i.e. climate disputes that try to hold states and companiesto their responsibilities. Who better than Eni, which alone emits more greenhousegases than the whole of Italy? The goal is to replicate what happened in theNetherlands, where in 2019 the Hague court sentenced the very powerful Shell inthe first instance to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by almost half by 2030.Obviously the awareness is that it will certainly not be a court to forcecompanies to be environmentally friendly, but this is a further delegitimizationof multinationals that have so far thrived from the height of their absoluteimpunity. So much so that in Italy this desire to sue Eni had been talked aboutfor years, but fear and caution had always taken the upper hand; and in thiscontext it is not surprising that the six-legged dog has already threatened acountersuit for defamation against the two NGOs. On the other hand, thesix-legged dog knows all the tricks to return any criticism to the sender. Proofof this is the recent Capital bill, the bill with which the Meloni governmentintends to encourage the financialisation of companies. Inside there is aparagraph which provides that the shareholders' meetings of large companies, especially those with state participation (Eni, Enel, Snam, RFI and so on), willnow be held online. In other words, giving definitive confirmation to a practicethat had been going on for four years: with the excuse of the health emergency,in fact, as early as 2020, meetings between company members were prevented fromparticipating in the presence of so-called critical shareholders, i.e. those whodo not they limit themselves to incensing presidents and CEOs but prefer tochallenge them directly in the palaces of power. The government's assistance thussilences a form of dissent that over the years has given a lot of annoyance tocompanies such as Eni, which was increasingly expanding and was obtaining growingconsensus.Power runs fast to plug every gap, it will be up to imagining new forms ofstruggle. Also because Eni never stops in its constant propaganda work. In recentdays he has made noise the choice of the six-legged dog to even enter elementaryschools, through two silly projects with which he intends to teach how to becometelevision journalists! Furthermore, the project is aimed at pupils of thecomprehensive schools of Val d'Agri and Val Camastra, both areas of Basilicatawhere Eni's presence is very significant due to the oil and gas fields that thecompany has been exploiting for over 20 years, with all the corollary we know ofenvironmental and health impacts, occupational, economic and social blackmail. This is why the international protest End Fossil becomes even more important, which has spread to some Italian universities and which aims to fight theinvasion of fossil companies in the teaching of schools and universities, tocreate an ecological and grassroots alternative.Andrea Turcohttps://www.sicilialibertaria.it_________________________________________A - I N F O S N E W S S E R V I C EBy, For, and About AnarchistsSend news reports to A-infos-en mailing listA-infos-en@ainfos.caSPREAD THE INFORMATION
