Dear friends–
My name is Natsuo, and I am a passionate LGBT+ activist in Japan.
During the 2021 Summer Olympics, we harnessed the global spotlight to fight back against LGBT+ discrimination in Japan. Together with All Out, Human Rights Watch, and Athlete Ally, we launched the #JapanEqualityAct campaign to demand legal protections for our community.
I never could have expected what happened next.
The outpouring of love, global solidarity, and thousands of voices helped to amplify our fight. In fact, our petition received over 62,000 signatures – each one symbolizing the fight for love and equality – and increased pressure on the Japanese government to take action.
And all this support paid off. Last June, the government passed Japan's first ever legislation promoting the understanding of diversity based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
Although it falls short of a comprehensive non-discrimination act, it's a commendable first step toward the larger goal of ensuring equal rights for all.
Despite this success, the battle is not over. We will continue in our fight for more inclusive protections, and I'm grateful I can count you as an ally in this ongoing struggle.
Thanks for going All Out!
