August 1, Chicoutimi on the Nitassinan. The Emma Goldman Collective,
which is also involved in the blockade, made a banner drop in solidaritywith the traditional Ilnu families fighting for the protection of theterritory. (Solidarity blocking km 59, Guardians of the territory instruggle). ---- Blockade north of Dolbeau-Mistassini: Native guardiansof Nitassinan demand an end to loggingPress release[Mashteuiatsh, July 31, 2023]The Collectif Mashk Assi, whose mission isto protect Nitassinan, sent a formal notice to the Résolu company onJuly 31, 2023 to recall the opposition of the guardian families of theInnu territory to any logging on their territory (see attachment). Thecompany has been notified by registered mail that guardians of theterritory will be patrolling the 40 km sector north ofDolbeau-Mistassini to apply the self-determination of their ancestralsovereignty and to ensure that no non- burnt be cut for profit. Ablockade was set up in the area on the morning of July 31, 2023 tomonitor the application of Innu law and compliance with the formal notice. The Mashk Assi Collective recalls that failure to respect the consent ofthe guardian families of Nitassinan in industrial activities on theirancestral territory will give rise to legal proceedings based on theirinherent right to practice Innu Aitun, the traditional Ilnuash way oflife, as protected by "international law, the United Nations Declarationon the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and section 35 of the Constitutionof Canada, 1982." The formal notice filed on July 31, 2023 constitutes afinal warning, following the notice of eviction of seven forestrycompanies, including Resolute, having been filed on May 29, 2023.Since the filing of this eviction notice, the worst forest fires in thehistory of Nitassinan have ravaged the traditional territory of the Innupeople, threatening the fauna and flora on which their identity andtheir ancestral way of life are based. On June 18, 2023, the CollectifMashk Assi had signed, jointly with the Atikamekw Ekoni Aci movement andthe Mohawk group Kanien'keha:ka Kahnistensera, a request for amoratorium on logging in Nitassinan to let the forest regenerate andlimit the spread of lights (see attachment). The Collectif Mashk Assiconsiders that the unilateral development of the forest by thegovernment of Quebec for commercial purposes without consulting theindigenous guardians of the territory is entirely responsible for theforest fires which posed unprecedented risks to the health and safety ofall of Northeastern America. The blockade put in place in Dolbeau-Mistassini on July 31, 2023 alsoaims to put an end to mining prospecting by the First Phosphate company, which intends to monopolize the resources of Nitassinan without theapproval of the guardian families of the Innu territory (seeattachment). Finally, the Collectif Mashk Assi recalls that no treaty oragreement in principle affecting the ancestral rights of the Ilnuashpeople can be negotiated without the agreement of the guardian familiesof Nitassinan who hold the ancestral title to these lands. Morespecifically, it rejects outright the Petapan Treaty, currently beingnegotiated behind closed doors by representatives of different levels ofgovernment including federal government agents called Band Councils. Aformal notice to halt negotiations of the Petapan Treaty was also sentby registered mail to all parties involved on June 2.https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=680677137422402&set=a.466693605487424_________________________________________A - I N F O S N E W S S E R V I C EBy, For, and About AnarchistsSend news reports to A-infos-en mailing listA-infos-en@ainfos.ca
