Women, youth, the population rose up to demand the freedom tolive, quite simply, without archaic moral obligation, in perfectequality between men and women. ---- The response of the IslamicRepublic to this explosion of freedom is brutal and fierce. In additionto the savage repression against the demonstrations, the death penaltyis in full swing. At least 290 people have been executed since January1, an average of more than 10 per week. On the podium of barbarism, theIslamic Republic of Iran is in second place, after Communist China.In Iran, you can be sentenced to death for having participated indemonstrations, such as those that have been taking place since thedeath in detention of Mahsa Amini, arrested for wearing the"inappropriate" Islamic veil. What courage these women show who dare tochallenge the autocratic power that suffocates them!You can also be sentenced to death there for daring to criticizereligion. On May 8, Yousef Mehrad and Sadrollah Fazeli Zare were hangedfor this charge. They had been arrested and imprisoned in 2020 forhaving created a Telegram group entitled "Critique of superstition andreligion", on which among other things appeared a video of a burnedQuran as well as remarks questioning religion.On May 10, two days after this execution, in an immense arm of honor toHumanity, the Islamic Republic of Iran was designated by the UnitedNations to chair the Social Forum of the Human Rights Council for 2023.of the United Nations, which - the height of irony - is dedicated thisyear to the theme "the contribution of technology and innovation to thepromotion of human rights". All this with the deafening silence, if notthe endorsement, of "democratic" governments around the worldYet the struggle for freedom of thought is inseparable from the strugglefor social justice. Pierre-Joseph Proudhon distinguished three forms ofalienation: Religion (alienation from reason); the state (alienation ofthe will) and property (alienation of the body). The three forms ofself-alienation are linked and connected to each other like threeinterlocking rings, and human liberation is only possible by breakingfree from all three.The despicable execution of these two heroes of free thought reminds usof that of the Chevalier de la Barre, a young man who in 1766 had alsobeen accused of desecration of religious objects and blasphemousremarks. After being tortured, he was brought to the scaffold, the noosearound his neck, carrying on his back a sign on which was written"impious, blasphemer and execrable sacrilege".
