At the beginning of June, a series of demonstrations took place in
several cities in tribute to Clément Méric, assassinated by neo-Naziskinheads on June 5, 2013. ---- Since the death of our comrade, theholding of an annual demonstration is de rigueur in Paris . This year,the initiators of the mobilization naturally wanted to mark the spiritson the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the events. Thus, spreadover several days : the presentation of the book Clément Méric, a lifeof struggles, two evenings of concerts (with in particular the rapperMédine, today a strong supporter of the anti-fascist fight, or the groupAgnostic Front, emblematic of the New York Punk-Hardcore scene), aninternational anti-fascist meeting on June 3, a demonstration on June 4,and a tribute rally on June 5.In response to the energy deployed, the crowds were there throughout theweekend. Several thousand people rushed to the concerts, the crowd wassuch that La Parole Errante, the place on Saturday evening, had to closeits doors at 6:30 p.m.! During these festive events, antifa slogans,tributes and demands resounded loudly!A substantial mobilizationMore limited was the audience of the meeting, where several hundredanti-fascists came to listen to the interventions of personalities fromsocial, ecological and international struggles. This last dimension wasparticularly present during the weekend. Many European delegations hadmade the trip, bringing their experiences of struggle.On Sunday morning, a large demonstration crossing eastern Parismobilized up to 5,000 people in a dynamic atmosphere. If this number ismuch higher than the mobilizations of recent years for Clément, it isdisappointing given the national and international nature of the event.We will also note the absence of appearance of a part of theanti-fascist movement and the political left (Young Guard, LO, PCF,etc.), which can only be harmful when the subject is the commemorationof a young trade union activist assassinated by the extreme right.Finally, to close this weekend, a tribute rally was held on Monday 5 inthe early evening, at the scene of Clément's assassination. More than200 people were present, in a dignified and solemn atmosphere. UCL waspresent on all these dates, by holding a table at the Wandering Word andby a significant presence at the two events of the 4th and 5th.At the end of this weekend, we come out more convinced than ever that,faced with the obvious threat from the extreme right in the street andat the ballot box, the anti-fascist camp needs unity and to strengthenits links in France as elsewhere. From this point of view, theorganization of this weekend was relevant.
