WORLD WORLDWIDE POLAND News Journal Update - (en) Poland, FA: REACTION TO THE WILD CARPATHIA INITIATIVE CAMPING (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

It's Thursday evening, a group of people in Rozbracie. We talk, some /re

phone, there is a nervous atmosphere. In the morning we learned aboutthe eviction of the camp blocking the logging in the Turnicki NationalPark*, several people were detained. We know that there was no basis forthis, and as it will later turn out, no charges were filed. The motherof one of the detained persons is with us. There are 4 of them in total, all from Poznan, including one associated with the Anarchist Federation, the Rozbrat collective and WOMB. ---- The detention was very brutal, people were forcibly dragged from the barracks and dragged around theblockade area, put into police cars. Their rights were violated from thevery beginning of the actions of the police and forest services. Then wefound out that the official legal and actual grounds for detention wereonly known when the persons signed the detention protocol, a few hoursafter they were taken from the blockade. They were not informed of theirrights.Almost at the same time, there are repressions against the families ofthe detained. Shaky J. tells us that the police entered her husband'shouse - they searched it, trying to find anything that could be matchedto the theory about finding psychoactive substances in the camp. Theyfind nothing, they only cause anxiety among the families of thedetainees. We try to comfort J., who is getting more and more nervous, she is afraid for her nineteen-year-old daughter, this is her firstdetention. However, it is difficult to convince a mother that her childis safe, knowing what the realities of such detention are.Our fears are later confirmed. The detained persons did not have direct contact with a lawyer for 24hours, despite repeated information that they demanded it. When one ofthem said she didn't want to sign anything without a lawyer present, shewas told "we're not going to wait a week for that signature." Anotherhad the phone snatched from her hand, pretending later that she did notknow what phone it was about. The detained people had no access to foodor toilets for many hours. They were told to pick the person who neededit the most, to go first to the search, the rest to wait another hour. Those using the toilet were rushed. At one point, while asking aboutfood, the detained people heard that if they had not prolonged thepreparation of protocols (trying to include a mention that they demandedcontact with a lawyer!!! ) they would get their food faster. Some ofthem could not use a chair to sit down for a few hours.A girl taking medication was taken to the hospital with her hands cuffedbehind her back. Another, after stripping naked during a strip search, the policewoman repeatedly asked "was it worth it". The contact lenswearer was not allowed to take the contact lens case with themovernight, so could not remove them before going to bed (another optionwas to deposit them and grope around, not knowing when they would bereturned). The detainees were not allowed to change into clean clothes, take a shower or otherwise take care of their hygiene. Their cries wereridiculed and there was an atmosphere of intimidation. They also failedto take all the things from the blockade area, as far as we know theywere seized by the forest guard, it is not known when and if they can berecovered at all.Having such information, it is difficult to convince a worried parentthat the daughter, despite the fact that she has been determined andwell prepared for ecological activist activities for a long time, willmanage in this extreme situation. Seeing the brutality of the servicesduring the Solidarity manifestations in Warsaw, we ourselves were afraidfor the detainees. Intimidation, physical and psychological violence isa constant tool of the authorities and the forest service. For a longtime, attempts have been made to criminalize social opposition to thedestruction of nature. It is also scandalous to use GOPR to stopecological civil protests, which took place during the eviction of thecamp of the  Wild Carpathians Initiative .In the dramatic climate situation in which we find ourselves, whenblockades and direct actions are often the only measurable form ofsocial pressure on the destructive capitalist system, we do not agree tocontinuous repression of people actively participating in protestactions. We are concerned about the future of the forest we defended. The Turnicki National Park, designed for 30 years, for which we havebeen fighting and still fighting, would protect fragments of theCarpathian Forest from predatory forest management. The State Forestsconsistently destroy the areas of the planned park, and stateinstitutions responsible for nature protection wash their hands of thispractice. No national park has been created in Poland for 20 years - inthe era of climate crisis and the disappearance of biodiversity, we mustprotect as many forests and other green areas as possible.* What forest is this about? About the remains of the relic CarpathianForest , the existence of which the State Forests deny, although in oldbrochures and calendars they themselves used this name. The idea ofestablishing the Turnicki National Park (not necessarily under thatname) is a long one, because for the first time this idea came up beforeWorld War II. However, for almost 40 years, serious steps have beentaken in this direction.
