Today in our country, a high percentage of female workers suffer from
mental health problems directly related to their work. According to theEPA (Active Population Survey), there are 18.7% of women who feel thatwe are subjected to great pressure during our workday, also includingsituations of threats and violence in our jobs, as well as difficulttreatment or intimidation by customers, students, patients, etc. ---- Inaddition to the usual risks, female workers are exposed to differentpsychosocial risks connected to our jobs due to the fact that they arewomen. In order to understand what this situation means for us, we aregoing to put into context what we call the "sexualization" of a job andthe different ways that we can find ourselves. As women, in addition tomaking us go through precarious situations like the entire workingclass, on too many occasions we are forced under threat of dismissal toput up with being treated like one more product that the company puts upfor sale, having to go dressed in a certain way, made up, slim andperfect in the eyes of employers and clients. This nightmare for many women begins in job interviews, where we have tolisten to questions about our private life, partner, intentions to bemothers, to get married, to have a family, assuming that if we had one,we would be the ones in charge of taking care of everyone. ourenvironment, thus denying us the opportunity to even access the job ifthey do not hear that when the time comes we would be willing to leaveeverything for the company. In some interviews they don't even ask, because they have assumed thatif we become pregnant or our situation changes in any other way, theycan fire us under any excuse they come up with and before which we arealmost always defenseless. If we get a job, and leaving aside the well-known salary gap and otherinjustices against which we fight every day, it is very possible thatthey have hired us precisely because we are women, because they thinkthat by being women we will have more sales than our partner, because ifwe are made up, dressed in a sinuous way before his eyes we are a claim. So if we are worth it for some companies, because according to them wemake them earn more money for being women. They provide you with auniform they would never give a teammate, and they deliberately put youat risk by displaying yourself as an accessible commodity. Even in jobsin which we directly deal with clients, there have been cases in whichcompanies have taken appointments in which there is a great risk ofsuffering a situation of sexual harassment, finding ourselves alone withour aggressor and having to fight for ourselves. with our own hands. These situations occur more often than we imagine, but it is very rarethat they are reported, because we always live under the shadow of thefear of losing a job that doesn't even deserve that name.It is very hard to see how a company can destroy our sanity and ourlives, reaching the point where nothing matters anymore, and you justwant to never have to fight again so that you are not judged, harassedor even not touch or worse.Having defined this extremely extreme situation that we women experiencein our jobs, to which we must go every day without knowing what we aregoing to find, if that day we will be attacked or not, enduring theunpleasant looks of clients who think they can do what whoever they wantwith us, and because the employer confuses the employees with slaves ontoo many occasions, we can get an idea of why there is this highpercentage of women who suffer such an impact on our mental healthrelated to our work environment. How many times have we heard stories from colleagues and have evenexperienced firsthand not seeing any other way out to escape other thansuicide, that when we are on our way to work we fight with all our mightnot to crash into the first thing we see so as not to have to seeourselves subjected to certain risks, some as strong as being touchedand having to escape from your aggressor in your workplace, and that thecompany tells you that if we find ourselves in that situation we are theones who fight to prevent it, but And if we can't?Sometimes we even prefer to destroy our hands, a leg or our face so thatwe no longer have to be a claim product for companies, so as not to beexposed. And without going to such an extreme, we know that many of uswill need therapy and medication to be able to endure the day to day ofthis type of work, and that even when we are out of it we are not thesame again, since we create a state constant alert in all facets of ourlives and all this makes it more difficult to adapt to a new job.It is very hard to see how a company can destroy our sanity and our lifewith these actions, reaching the point where nothing matters to usanymore, and you just want to never have to fight again so that you arenot judged, harassed or even for that they do not touch you or somethingworse. We want to stop feeling so exposed, looking back when we leavework and a client has been bothering you. From squeezing the car keys sohard that your hands almost bleed. We want to feel safe, valued and freewomen.Looking at it from the perspective of the physical aspect, it also has avery harsh impact on our mental health by demanding that we always beperfect, not gain weight, be the canon that employers ask for so thatyou can make them earn money. We cannot continue to tolerate these actions by companies, and it isimperative to start this fight as soon as possible, because the lives ofmany colleagues and our health are at stake every day, and we do notknow how many are marked for life. Therefore, in the event of any alarm, even in a job interview, look for us, we are with you and we will endthis together.Think of these words when you see waitresses, masseuses, hostesses, etc.Surely within them there is a fight that you had no idea about. One response to "Sexualization at work and health consequences"Pingback: Sexualization at work and health consequences - AnarchistFederationhttps://www.cnt.es/noticias/sexualizacion-en-el-trabajo-y-consecuencias-en-la-salud/_________________________________________A - I N F O S N E W S S E R V I C EBy, For, and About AnarchistsSend news reports to A-infos-en mailing listA-infos-en@ainfos.caSPREAD THE INFORMATION
