From the No Borders Team Facebook page ---- In Germany, proposals to
restore border controls with Poland and the Czech Republic areresurfacing. This is the request of the police unions and politicians ofthe CDU party, the Christian Democratic Union . ---- The German Ministryof the Interior has not accepted this request for the moment. ----Border control in the Schengen area should be a measure of last resort. This is how the European Commission regulations describe it: ---- "TheSchengen Borders Code offers Member States the ability to temporarilyreintroduce border control at internal borders in the event of a seriousthreat to public order or internal security. The reintroduction ofborder control at internal borders must be applied as a measure of lastresort, in exceptional situations, and must respect the principle ofproportionality. The duration of such temporary reintroduction of bordercontrol at internal borders shall be limited in time, depending on thelegal basis invoked by the Member State introducing such border control."The same document specifies the maximum duration of border controls (sixmonths). In most cases, these border controls are activated for approximately twoweeks to a month due to[terrorist]attacks or on the occasion of majorinternational events such as sports competitions, climate, G7 or G20summits and/or awards Nobel. However, this situation can be prolonged from time to time, even aftersix months. And so, since 2015, Germany has extended border controls with Austriauntil today - due to the "large influx of people seeking internationalprotection".Furthermore, 2015 was the year of the reintroduction of border controlsin Austria (with Italy, Hungary, Slovakia and Slovenia), Slovenia (withHungary), Sweden and Denmark (to anyone arriving) , Belgium and Malta. All these checks[happen]for the same reason: the presence of people onthe move who are fleeing war and poverty and want to save their lives.Border controls are currently carried out: * in Norwegian ports that provide ferry connections with Schengen areacountries (due to the threat to critical land and maritimeinfrastructure and the danger of Russian intelligence); * in Denmark, at the land and sea border with Germany. From 3 to 10August the controls were extended due to the "threat of Islamicterrorism, organized crime, smuggling, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, illegal migration along the central Mediterranean route" (the controlperiod is increased until August 17. Source, ndt); * in the aforementioned Germany, precisely on the border with Austria, due to the "increase in illegal immigration coming from Turkey andcrossing the Western Balkans, the pressure on the reception system forasylum seekers and the smuggling of human beings"; * within the Swedish borders due to the threat of Islamic terrorism; * in Austria, at the land border with Hungary and Slovenia. Reason:"Pressure on the reception system for asylum seekers, strong migratorypressure on the EU's external border with Turkey and the WesternBalkans, threat of arms trafficking and criminal networks due to the warin Ukraine, human smuggling." * in France, near the borders with Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany,Switzerland, Italy and Spain, due to "the new terrorist threats, thegrowing risk of terrorist organizations on national territory - whichhave as their objective the Rugby World Cup which will take place willtake place in September and October 2023 -, the increase in irregularflows at the external borders (from the central Mediterranean and thewestern coast of the Western Balkans)."As can be seen, therefore, in most countries at least one of the manyreasons for introducing border controls is the issue of migratorymovements. For the same reason German police officials and somepoliticians are pressing this point. People who cross the eastern route- the border between Poland and Belarus - very often take the Germanstate as their destination or, at least,[it is seen by them as]a transitcountry, a stopover to go further afield. Some migrant and refugee people decide to move away from Poland -towards Western Europe - only after having clashed with Polishbureaucracy, the hell of detention camps and the lack of systemic support.Based on the Dublin Regulations, these people are often subjected todeportation measures: once controls are in place, they will have lessopportunity to tell their story and put their lives together. And againbecause of these controls,[migrants and refugees]will simply be rejectedor returned to the country they come from. Without being able to requestanything. It is a very common situation on the border between Spain andFrance: those who want to reach French territory repeatedly try to crossthe border by land - so as not to risk drowning in the treacherousBidasoa river.Border control does not affect every person who crosses the border -unless it is a non-white person.Racial profiling and document checks at internal Schengen borders areproducing good results. According to an activist from a migrant supportorganization in the town of Irun (on the border between Spain andFrance), "Here there are no borders if you are not black or Arab."We also hear about profiling in Sweden, Denmark and practically everywhere.Students who cross borders to go to school every day or people who go towork are identified. And, of course, those seeking to enter a country toask for asylum or another form of protection, to join a family and/orstart a different life.No borders? Human dignity? Only if you are a citizen of the European Union. What are these values and ideas if they only apply to a small group ofpeople?https://gruppoanarchicogalatea.noblogs.org/post/2023/09/04/controlli-nella-fortezza-europa/_________________________________________A - I N F O S N E W S S E R V I C EBy, For, and About AnarchistsSend news reports to A-infos-en mailing listA-infos-en@ainfos.ca
