On 16 and 17 August 1893, a horrendous apparently "fratricidal" massacre
which was actually caused by the employers' policies took place inFrance; the breeding ground was in fact the rivalry that the owners ofthe salt pans had established between immigrant and native workers,using Italian immigrants as immigrants are used today in Italy againstother workers, that is, as a slave reserve to impose literally bestialconditions on everyone; certainly the historical and social situation isdifferent today and the level of dramatic conflict between workers thatwas at the origin of the Aigues Mortes massacre has not been reached butcertain episodes - for example the squad attacks against some strikesorganized by Si.Cobas and other trade unions base, by hired scabs, bringto mind Aigues Mortes, at least for "association of ideas"; thesubstance and the "teaching" are clear: workers and the exploited mustovercome the divisions that the master has tried, since the times of theRoman Empire, to induce divisions (Divide et impera) and must achieveunity of intent and practices to guarantee a job worthy of the name thatis an opportunity for income and salary without giving up one's healthand psychophysical safety in exchange.The anniversary of another massacre, that of Marcinelle, has justpassed, accompanied by - predominantly - rare, evasive and misleadingcomments both from the institutions and from the "information bodies";the proposal that we have been airing for some time, namely to make 8August not the day of the Italian worker abroad but rather the day ofthe immigrant worker or in any case of the immigrant, has remained, onceagain, vox clamans in desert, nor is this surprising given that thecountry and the entire planet are heading towards desertification -physical but also ethical; only a political and institutional classsubservient to economic power can "neglect" such a proposal which wouldinstead allow us to break the suppression and the silence, after thefirst, albeit courageous, denunciation by the Guardian, regarding themassacre in Qatar on the occasion of the realization of the footballworld cup; what else was that massacre if not an event similar to thatof Marcinelle and even more catastrophic from the point of view ofnumerical dimension?
