Life on Earth is dying before our astonished gaze. According to the
latest scientific studies, industrial globalization is responsible forexceeding 6 of the 9 safety limits for life on our planet. Among themare the upcoming overcoming of 1.5 degrees of global warming (certainlybefore 2030) and the consequent climatic chaos, the triggering of theSixth Mass Extinction of species and the rupture of various cycles ofself-regulation of the Earth. We know what this means: death andsuffering on a scale never seen before. And no, this is not going to besolved by science or technology, simply because this civilizationcreates more and bigger problems than it is capable of solving.The institutions have failed in the most basic of their functions, whichshould be to safeguard the right to life of their population. No one issafe anymore, not you, not me, not our families, not our territory,everything we love is in danger. I'm sorry to say this, but I no longerhave hope, I only have anger. Because governments are lackeys offinancial elites, whose greed is greater than our planet is capable ofsupporting. As the world collapses, they break profit records every yearat the cost of exploiting our bodies and our land. This system is deeplycorrupted and corrupts everything it touches. That is why we are alsofailing, because we continue to play by their rules and waste timefighting over the handouts that are thrown at us with contempt. Becausethey sell us their trash and we keep buying it from them. We accept anidea of human progress that has nothing to do with reality: we are justnarcissistic animals that one day discovered oil -and other fossilfuels- and let corrupt elites use the enormous fossil energy to enrichthemselves and bring destruction to the every corner of the Earth. Welet them build a smokescreen made of alienating comforts andtechnologies, while they stole everything from us, including ourdignity. We lose our dignity every time we conform to the bloodyinjustices that are growing in the world, because the most vulnerablealways end up being the first to pay the bill due to our passivity. Weallow the mass torture of animals and their extermination at anindustrial level, we allow colonialism to strike down peaceful societiesof the Global South and to devastate their lands rich in biodiversity,we allow our neighbors to be exploited and go hungry.Neoliberalism, patriarchy and neocolonialism grow like a cancer on ourplanet, imposing their infamous laws. But their time is also running outbecause, as much as they refuse to accept it, infinite growth is notpossible on a finite planet.But this story is coming to an end and the decisive moments are drawingnear. Global industrial development has reachedits zenith and the limits of the planet announce a great change ofcycle. The (multisystemic) material, energy, ecological, and climatecrises are waking us up to a harsh reality in this decade: endlesseconomic, health, and food crises, as well as militarization, fascism,and repression to manage them. Will we rise to the occasion? Will wetake advantage of this historic opportunity to side with life in itsfight against capital? Will we manage to undertake an ecosocialtransition towards a system that puts life at the center or will we sinkinto barbarism towards extinction? We have a collective responsibilityto resist.The climate justice movement has made its decision: in the face ofecosocial collapse, it will fight to the end. A diverse movement, richin imagination and willing to question the very foundations of thiscriminal system. In 2018, Fridays For Future (FFF) and ExtinctionRebellion (XR) emerged to reinvigorate the global environmentalmovement, which had fallen into the dynamics of the system with muchmarginalization and complacency.Through massive civil resistance, XR achieved the declaration of aclimate emergency and the holding of citizen assemblies for the climatein various countries, starting with the United Kingdom, where theyblocked off central London for two weeks, resulting in more than 1,000arrests. for nonviolent civil disobedience. With its strikes and youthdemonstrations, FFF spread concern and a sense of urgency in thepopulation. In 2022 the movement has diversified and, above all, it hasradicalized. Groups related to Just Stop Oil (United Kingdom), withinthe A22 Network, and other decentralized groups worldwide, have achievedgreat media impact with high-level nonviolent disruption actionssustained over time.Throwing paint on works of art is just the tip of the iceberg among manyother actions: blocking airports and private jets, blocking highways,blocking oil refineries and their supply, plugging holes in golf courseswith cement, throwing paint on government buildings and business, etc.The consequences of these actions: fines and jail. Hundreds of peoplefrom the Global North have gone to jail for peacefully protestingagainst the eco-social crisis in recent months. They thus join anendless list of repressed and murdered environmental defenders in theGlobal South. We are a generation willing to sacrifice their own freedomto show the conflict CAPITAL against LIFE, because how much is ourfreedom worth compared to the threats we face?Faced with oppression, we try to inspire a spirit of rebellion hiddenamong so much fear, so much conformism and so much cynicism. We aretrying to light the fuse of a revolution that we know can only becarried out by the united working class, led by women and diversities,all dispossessed.I myself have participated in several actions of this type, withRebellion or Extinction (XR Spain), Scientific Rebellion and PlantFuture, and I am facing several trials with possible prison sentences.On April 6, fifty scientists and activists threw biodegradable paint atthe Congress of Deputies, evidencing the bloodbath that they areallowing. I also traveled to Germany this fall for a three-week ongoingdisruption campaign, which would land me and 15 other fellow scientificactivists (6 Spanish) in pretrial detention for a week. In the latestaction, we dared to go to the heart of German automotive opulence, theBMW Velt museum in Munich, and sprayed cane syrup (a stickypetroleum-like substance) on several luxury cars and attached scientificpapers to them proving that the industrial future they are trying tosell is a farce. In the end, we superglued ourselves to the mostsymbolic car and waited to be arrested while we sang our anger and ourpain for this planet that is dying.With open-faced non-violent direct action we appeal to human dignity.Faced with oppression, we try to inspire a spirit of rebellion hiddenamong so much fear, so much conformism and so much cynicism. We aretrying to light the fuse of a popular revolution that we know can onlybe carried out by the united working class, led by women anddiversities, all dispossessed. The essence of the people claiming thepower that has always been denied them. The power to build a world worthliving in, worth fighting for. That world that is born in the heart ofeach girl and is willing to flourish in us. The revolution will be arevolution of care, a revolution of humility, of recognizing that we area fragile species like others, of giving thanks and helping toregenerate this nature that nourishes us, instead of trying to imposeour will on it. And we are not alone in this fight, we are part of theforces of nature that are awakening and that will not stop until thedamage caused is stopped. We are nature defending itself. And on thisdifficult path, love is our resistance. That is something they can neverbuy. After all, brotherhood begins with shared pain, as Ursula K. LeGuin said. The community is made in the fight, and if everything we loveis at risk, our bet has to be consistent with this fact.
