Many abandoned animals are elderly dogs who once provided lifelong companionship and now need extra care in their twilight years. But sadly, some pet owners opt to dump their senior dogs on the streets and replace them with a new, “cuter” puppy.
Left to fend for themselves, these aging dogs endure a cruel fate, faithfully searching for their families until their fragile bodies collapse from sickness or starvation. Meanwhile, their former families have already cosied up with the little puppy who replaced them. And as that puppy grows up, the same painful fate ultimately awaits. This heart-wrenching scenario plays out all too frequently in Uruguay. |

Shockingly, the Uruguayan penal code fails to recognize abandonment, brutal beatings, hangings, starvation, or even SEXUAL ABUSE of animals as criminal offenses. With no sanctions that involve jail time or community service, such callous acts of animal cruelty run rampant in Uruguay’s capital, Montevideo. |

El Refugio has a special place in our hearts because it specializes in the care of elderly and disabled dogs who have the slightest hope of survival on the streets. Among the 400+ animals in the shelter’s care, many have special needs ranging from physical deformities to chronic illnesses, which demand expensive medications and specialist veterinary care.
Animals like poor Nieve - an elderly dog who arrived at the shelter suffering from a severe, untreated eye infection so advanced that worms were literally consuming her eyes. Sadly, her vision could not be saved, but with the help of critically needed medicine, the infection was treated, and Nieve can now look forward to a life free of pain and filled with love. |

Luc, El Refugio is faced with a major problem, and they desperately need our help right now. An alarming influx of cats and dogs are being dumped outside the shelter gates or even heartlessly tossed over its walls. It is already a challenge to feed so many hungry animals, let alone provide those with special needs with life-saving medicine. |
