conspiracy theories. Theories and conspiracy theories are legion today,
however this phenomenon is not new. We only have to think of the Nazi
who distributed anti-Semitic pamphlets (The Protocols of the Elders of
Zion) denouncing a so-called Jewish plot. In the book Chronicles of a
Liquid Society, Umberto Eco devotes an entire chapter to the phenomenon.
Throughout time, there have been conspirators, however what conspiracy
theories evoke "is the idea of a universal conspiracy, according to
which all or almost all events in history are driven by a unique and
mysterious power which acts in the shadows" affirms the author. We know
them: Freemasons, Illuminati, reptilians and of course the variants of
the Jewish, Judeo-Masonic or even Judeo-Bolshevik conspiracy, etc.

Unlike the conspiracy theorists, Umberto Eco has no trouble thinking
"that it was by chance or by a combination of various stupidities that
most of the events that tormented him occurred over the millennia, from
the Trojan War to the present day[...]my peers are too stupid to design
one perfectly.» (Eco,p.145)

Eco further focuses on the theory that the Americans' moon landing was
filmed in a studio. He underlines the following facts: it would have
required the collaboration, if not of thousands, at least of hundreds of
people... would no one have ever spoken for an adequate amount? And
finally, we must not forget the Soviets in this story, who had every
interest in revealing the supposed fraud to the rest of the world. Would
the Soviets have remained silent? This is what Umberto Eco calls "the
proof of silence".

Michel Musolino, the author of the book "The Perfect Conspirator's
Guide" borrows a logical principle from computer circles; Hanlon's razor
which states: "we must never attribute to malevolence what stupidity is
sufficient to explain[...]many events that we attribute to cunning or
dark calculation are explained by stupidity or "incompetence of the
actors." (Musolino,p.106)

 From doubt to disempowerment

The fires which ravaged many hectares of forest in Quebec this summer
were also the subject of crazy conspiracies. For conspiracy theorists,
it is easier to believe in the work of a malicious hand than to consider
that we are experiencing the full brunt of the consequences of climate
change. No!, the State did not deliberately light forest fires to
monopolize natural resources. On the other hand, governments and
captains of industry, through their willful blindness, their vagueness,
or even their incompetence to truly fight against climate change, bear
responsibility.

Umberto Eco emphasizes that "Conspiracy psychology arises from the fact
that the most obvious explanations of worrying facts do not satisfy us,
because it hurts us to accept them." (Eco, p.147.) Along the same lines,
the Zetkin Collective writes in Fossil Fascism: "Psychologists have
shown that when individuals feel a loss of control, they are inclined to
create illusory perceptual patterns to restore a sense of control:
conspiracy theories are an option." (Zetkin Collective, p.302).

If the fires are part of a conspiracy, all that remains is for the
whistleblower to expose the conspirators and get rid of the plotters; a
beautiful program. It's practical, we avoid both eco-anxiety and
questions that call into question our North American way of life.
Umberto Eco writes: "Suspicious interpretation, in a certain sense,
absolves us of our responsibilities, because it lets us think that
behind what concerns us lies a secret and that the concealment of this
secret constitutes a conspiracy at our expense.» (Eco p.148)

A new form of theism

Anyone who has rubbed shoulders with the followers of Qanon and their
"deep state" theory and the pedo-Satanists, or even with a flat-minded
person, has noticed that we are no longer in the order of the rational
but in that of belief. As Umberto Eco points out: "people do not want to
know, on the contrary they want to fulfill their need to believe even if
it means believing in false things (Eco p.154). In the same vein, the
author of the book "The Perfect Conspiracy Guide" writes: "conspiracy
theories are not a pathology; they are in reality closer to blind
ideology, sectarianism or religious fundamentalism." (Musolino,p.68)

We cannot take conspiracy theorists lightly. Today they represent a
major current of opinion that we must try to understand in order to
better contain it!
