While the left is under fire for its positions of support for Palestine,the far right and in particular the National Rally seem to bere-entering the "republican arc". Anti-Semitism is, however, part of theroots of the RN, which still maintains links with notoriousanti-Semites. ---- The bloody attack by Hamas against the population andthe positions of the Israeli army was, within the national politicalscene, the opportunity to once again measure the notability of the RN.While the reformist left parties were torn over the content of thedeclarations to be made, Marine Le Pen's party condemned the attackwithout hesitation, firmly supporting the Israeli state.It must be said that the violence of the events lent itself well to theparty's rhetoric around the "Islamist danger", and it took theopportunity to take a new step in its strategy of normalization with theJewish community. A notable fact which would have been unthinkable a fewyears ago, on October 9, RN deputies were able to appear at the march insupport of Israel in Paris, without worries, while left-wing electedofficials had to exfiltrate in the face of the hostility of the crowd.Thus, the focus on the erratic expression of the left, in particular ofFrance Insoumise, even allowed Marine Le Pen to place them in the"anti-republican camp", without provoking notable reactions from thegovernment and from the rest of the parliamentarians! However, it is theextreme right that has always been considered outside the Republican arcsince the start of the Fifth Republic. How could this reversal have beenpossible in such a short time?Symptom of general right-handednessThe fact that the leader of the main far-right party can feel socomfortable is first of all due to the radicalization to the right thatis taking place in the political-media apparatus. In the case of thecurrent conflict and its resonance in France, we think of the continuedpressure on the term "terrorism" in each circumstance, a "portmanteau"term which makes it possible to encompass all acts of resistance and tocriminalize all expressions of support for the Palestinian people (suchas the banning of all demonstrations by Darmanin), or even the ever moreassumed racism of a large part of the political class, particularly onthe right, where discriminatory proposals, systematic expulsions andreductions in rights in mind, no longer have much to envy of Le Pen.You don't have to look far to find anti-Semites in or around theNational Rally...Blandine Le CainBut above all, the RN has worked for a decade to erase its anti-Semiticpast, by working to get closer to the organizations supposed torepresent the Jewish community in France. Recently, in October 2022, wesaw representatives of the RN on the community radio "Radio J", or thecouple of anti-Nazi lawyers Serge and Beate Klarsfeld receiving a medalfrom the RN mayor of Perpignan Louis Alliot. Within the NationalAssembly, with the number of its deputies, RN Sébastien Chenu wasappointed vice-president of the France-Israel friendship group, and theparty tried to seize the presidency of the group of study on anti-Semitism.Anti-Semitism, a base of the extreme rightHowever, these attempts, if they are successful, have their limits.Because even in these times favorable to the far right, the memoryremains: founded by former collaborators, led for decades byanti-Semites, the RN is marked, like its entire current, by thisstinking ideology. This is still evidenced today by the links thatMarine Le Pen still maintains with executives of the GUD, a deeplyanti-Jewish national-revolutionary organization. We can also cite apolitical survey from January 2022, which highlights that among RNsupporters, 39% agree with the fact that "Jews have too much power inthe area of the economy and finance", proof that in one's ownelectorate, there is no mistake about it[1]. And if today the RN istrying to erase its roots, there is no need to dig very far to find itin the whole of the French extreme right[2]. As always with"demonization", when you scratch a little, you find stale ideas.Hugues (UCL Fougères)ANTISEMITISM AT THE HEART OF THE RNDespite the demonization and the strategy undertaken by Louis Alliot in2014 to put an end to the association of the RN with anti-Semitism, itis in the very roots of the RN/FN. In fact, the National Front wasfounded in 1972 by a former SS man and a number of collaborators,anti-Semites to the last degree. A current RN deputy Frédéric Boccaletti(Var), is even the founder of a bookstore selling numerous negationistworks. The growing support for Israel, notably led by Louis Alliot since2011, finds its justification above all in an Islamophobia that hasbecome the majority, but also in the implicit idea that Israel would bethe "real" country of Jews who are eternally foreign to France and thatit We must therefore support it to be able to send them there!Marine Le Pen spoke in 2017 of Macron as an "investment banker[who]wouldserve an ambition" foreign to the good of France, as a "globalist,oligarchic and ultra-Europeanist". A speech implicitly taking up anumber of traditional words and clichés of anti-Semitism. Theseanti-Semitic outings are not isolated "blunders": they are theexpression of the ideology which permeates the RN.
