The Court of Appeal of Reggio Calabria, profoundly reforming theprevious first degree sentence of the Court of Locri, which hadsentenced Mimmo Lucano to 13 years and two months of imprisonment, hasdropped the castle of accusations, built after a biased investigationand prevented by the Carabinieri, the Judge for preliminaryinvestigations, the Public Prosecutor of Locri, guided by theaffectionate and pressing recommendations of the then Prefect of ReggioCalabria Piantedosi, on the political mandate of the Minister of theInterior pro tempore Minniti. After seven hours of deliberation, the Court acquitted the 17defendants of all charges, and sentenced the former mayor Lucano forforgery in relation to a 2017 resolution to a year and a half on probation.Thus the "Xenia" investigation, conducted by the Prosecutor's Office andthe Carabinieri with an abundance of means, an abnormal volume ofwiretaps, all this without achieving any results, as the defense hasdemonstrated and this despite the fact that the transcripts of thewiretaps had been artfully manipulated, juxtaposing the differentintercept clips.In the 99 pages of the first instance sentence, the accused was accusedof being the promoter of a criminal association aimed at the illicitmanagement of funds intended for the Sprar and Cas projects.Among the crimes charged to Mimmo Lucano by the general prosecutor'soffice, there was also aggravated fraud, abuse of office, severalforgeries and embezzlement. All crimes fell on appeal, except for aforgery relating to a resolution. But what is more important is that thedefense has demonstrated the absence of any benefit for the accused, whowas found to have nothing and to have actually made the experimentavailable to reception of migrants rewards and personal earnings,deservedly received, but not retained for one's own benefit.
