Last November, finally, striving for the much desired independence,
after having lived for more than 30 years in a context still deeplylinked to the past, I arrived in this apartment in the so-called"Catania well". I find myself living with strangers. Aware ofapproaching other girls but totally unaware of both their experiencesand above all what would happen next. A woman, originally from Finland, who lived with us but had created her own bubble. M.J.P. she was totallytireless with her studies; she has been a university researcher invarious universities around the world. In recent years she had moved toCatania and was studying at the Department of Mathematics and ComputerScience. She always tended towards perfection, in every one of herhabits, words, gestures, without sparing herself. A condition that ledM.J.P. to extreme thinness, with an obsessive relationship, bothqualitatively and quantitatively, with food. She was a nutritionspecialist but with all the contradictions that came with it. She tendedtowards an abstract and ideal lifestyle without ever being able toachieve it, being far from the real body.A few days after her move to the apartment, I realize that M.J.P. shecan't stand up, so much so that she has the shopping delivered to herhome and I sort it out for her myself. She, with her rigidity, refusesmy taking care of her; nevertheless I call the ambulance and inform herof her precarious health condition. Help arrives, carrying M.J.P. tohospital admission. In the next room, our English roommate was busy withher online native language lessons. With headphones on she hadn't heardanything of what was happening. After a few weeks the Finnish girlreturns reconstituted, showing gratitude and recognition towards me.Over the winter months, you sought a reciprocal dialogue with me. Arelationship of sharing the apartment as complete strangers continuedbetween her and the other tenants. In the last few months, April-May, M.J.P. she had closed in on herselfagain. She was packing up her luggage, she was about to move, it is notknown whether she was in Catania itself or in another place. At acertain point, in early June, the door to her room closed and neverreopened again. All of us tenants, including the landlord, thought thatshe had left, without any warning. Then, after about ten days, themacabre discovery. A bad smell came from that door, thinking it wasgarbage that had left them. At a certain point, since the smell was nowunbearable, I decided to turn to the landlord. He first tried to openthe door but then, as it was locked from the inside, the firefighterscame, together with the police and the ambulance which then reported thedeath. The event took some time to process. I involved my closest friends frommy political sphere. Especially with Anna Di Salvo of Città Felice, whosuggested that I keep in mind M.J.P.'s experience, commemorating herwith a symbolic gesture of a bouquet of flowers in front of the door ofwhat was her room where she is expired. Roberto Bellassai was a greatsupport to me and defined this disappearance as a "political death", dueto the alienation we experience today. From the poem he wrote in memoryof her, I quote: "M.'s is a political death not only because of thesterilization of ideas and dialogue which do not allow the necessaryrelationships that change life". With Cettina Tiralosi I furtherclarified the effects of neoliberalism on women's lives, that is,isolation, with an unlimited sense of self-sufficiency without roots andwithout the nourishment of reciprocity to stay alive. Furthermore, intoday's era, estrangement from oneself occurs, due to all thedistractions that distance one from one's essence. Everything becomes anobject of consumption: food, activities, objects, clothing, entertainment, relationships between similar people which aretransformed into instruments of subjugation and power, with nopossibility of exit. The incident that happened constitutes for me apush to review and re-establish all relationships between women and menstarting from themselves, as a response to a living reality.Angela Strano in collaboration with Cettina Tiralosi.https://www.sicilialibertaria.it/_________________________________________A - I N F O S N E W S S E R V I C EBy, For, and About AnarchistsSend news reports to A-infos-en mailing listA-infos-en@ainfos.ca
