Dear New Yorkers,
Today’s the day to vote in New York’s off-year election, where the City Council races are at the top of the ballot. So far, it’s been an off year for turnout, too, with hardly 85,000 of the city’s nearly 3.5 million voters casting ballots during the early voting period, which ended on Sunday. If you’re just getting up to speed on today’s elections, we’ve got you covered: Find your poll site (voting starts at 6 a.m. and goes until 9 p.m.) and sample ballot here. Read up on races to watch in the City Council — especially if you live in The Bronx, Queens or southern Brooklyn, where there are several close contests. (Manhattan, somehow, had the most early voters despite a shortage of competitive races). Check out THE CITY’s interactive guide to learn about your City Council district in a newly drawn map. Here's a guide to the judicidal “races,” where only four of 22 contests are even nominally competitive.
With few people voting so far, there is room for surprises — especially in close City Council races, including some districts that were reshaped or outright created in a recent redistricting. And, in southern Brooklyn, eastern Queens and the northeast Bronx, Republicans are hoping to add to their five-member caucus in the 51-seat local legislature.
Read about those races and more here. |
