Dear New Yorkers,

Today’s the day to vote in New York’s off-year election, where the City Council races are at the top of the ballot.

So far, it’s been an off year for turnout, too, with hardly 85,000 of the city’s nearly 3.5 million voters casting ballots during the early voting period, which ended on Sunday.

If you’re just getting up to speed on today’s elections, we’ve got you covered:

  • Find your poll site (voting starts at 6 a.m. and goes until 9 p.m.) and sample ballot here

  • Read up on races to watch in the City Council — especially if you live in The Bronx, Queens or southern Brooklyn, where there are several close contests. (Manhattan, somehow, had the most early voters despite a shortage of competitive races).

  • Check out THE CITY’s interactive guide to learn about your City Council district in a newly drawn map.

  • Here's a guide to the judicidal “races,” where only four of 22 contests are even nominally competitive.

With few people voting so far, there is room for surprises — especially in close City Council races, including some districts that were reshaped or outright created in a recent redistricting.

And, in southern Brooklyn, eastern Queens and the northeast Bronx, Republicans are hoping to add to their five-member caucus in the 51-seat local legislature.

Read about those races and more here.

Weather scoop by New York Metro Weather

Tuesday's Weather Rating: 7/10. Showers from this morning will clear out as the day goes on, with sunshine and temperatures in the mid 60s. Very blustery winds are expected through this afternoon, and it turns much cooler tonight. The vibes are a bit of a roller coaster today!

Some other items of note:

  • In South Brooklyn’s Council District 48, the City Council race has gotten messy. Amber Adler, a Democrat, and Igor Kazatsker, an independent on the “Team Trump” line, are theoretically running against each other — and against incumbent Republican Inna Vernikov (who was recently arraigned on a gun charge). But the two campaigns share the same attorney, and have given thousands of dollars to the same campaign consulting firms. That has sparked concerns from election experts, as well as complaints from Vernikov about the true purpose of their political operations. Plus, Adler’s campaign is being investigated for allegedly taking straw donations.

  • On the latest episode of FAQ NYC, co-hosts Chrissy, Katie and Harry discuss the FBI’s raid on the residence of Brianna Suggs, Mayor Eric Adams’ chief fundraiser — and where that leaves the mayor and New York City.

Things To Do

Here’s what’s going on around the city this week.

Tuesday, Nov. 7: Election Day. Yes, we’re going to remind you again! Here is where to find your local poll site and sample ballot.

Tuesday, Nov. 7: Canstruction 2023, a competition of elaborate sculptures made from cans of food (donated after the exhibition). Free from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Brookfield Place, 230 Vesey St. in Manhattan, through Nov. 13.

Friday, Nov. 10: Gingerbread NYC: The Great Borough Bake-Off, a baking competition by both amateurs and professionals. The results are on view at the Museum of the City of New York through Jan. 15, 2024.

THE KICKER: The trees in Central Park have reportedly reached peak fall foliage colors.

Thanks, as always, for reading. Make it a great Tuesday.

Love,
THE CITY
