rebellion, CAB remembers two important revolts in Latin America that
have January 1st as a milestone: The Zapatista Uprising of 1994 and the
Victory of the Haitian Revolution in 1804. -- -- Knowing the people's

ZAPATISTA UPRISING OF 1994
On January 1, 1994, the date on which the North American Free Trade
Agreement (NAFTA) was signed, the Zapatista National Liberation Army
(EZLN) began an armed revolt in Chiapas, Mexico.

In its first statement, ELZN denounces the genocidal nature of the
Mexican State and calls on the people to fight for "work, land, shelter,
food, health, education, independence, freedom, democracy, justice and
peace".

The Zapatista Movement is built by indigenous peoples of Mexico and
demands the power to organize themselves without the oppression imposed
by the Nation-State, colonial in its essence, also denying the
exploitation of the capitalist system, which aims to annihilate the
original ways of life that resist.

Since January 1, 1994, the Zapatistas have faced the Mexican state,
building self-organized and rebellious territories, the "Caracóis". The
Zapatista Caracóis are a symbol of the autonomous anti-capitalist
struggle around the world, building a strong and rebellious people, from
below and to the left.

1804: VICTORY OF THE HAITIAN REVOLUTION

The uprising of people enslaved and subjugated by the French State began
in 1791 in the territory previously called São Domingos, and ended
victoriously on January 1, 1804.

The rebellion of thousands of black men and women was the first to
achieve abolition and revolutionaries like Toussaint L'Ouverture are
remembered to this day for playing an essential organizational role in
the triumph. After hard battles for freedom and the end of brutal
exploitation, the colonizers were defeated.

Thus, the country's independence was proclaimed, ending slavery in the
territory and naming it Haiti, a name used by the original people who
inhabited the region before being massacred by colonization.

The revolutionary triumph terrified the Europeans. Even after
independence, the colonialist empires maintained economic embargoes and
continued trying to take Haiti by force, without success. The Haitian
Revolution scared every planter on the continent and fueled the
struggles of black people for liberation and the abolition of slavery
throughout Latin America.

With the memory of the struggles of the people of this land they call
America, CAB wishes every rebel heart a 2024 of struggle and organization.

So that we continue to search for socialism and freedom, that we are
inspired to learn more about the revolutionary processes that teach us
so much and nourish our struggle on Brazilian soil.
