Agone editions, by deciding to reissue this classic of critical pedagogy(first published in 1974 by Masspéro editions), fill a gap in theFrench-speaking landscape. ---- Pedagogy of the Oppressed (Pedagogia dooprimado) "would be the third most cited work in the field of human andsocial sciences". If the work of Paulo Freire is not unknown to us, inparticular thanks to Irène Peirera who signs the preface here, it isstill little identified by the general public and the figure of theBrazilian teacher remains infinitely less popular than those of CélestinFreinet or, in another genre, of a Maria Montessori to whom educationreformers claim to be.The work, dense and not always very accessible at first glance - whichthe introduction and afterword nevertheless clarify very usefully -nevertheless allows direct access to the author's thoughts and to getrid of some of the preconceptions attached to the numerous conceptsdeveloped: "oppressed", "awareness", "banking pedagogy", "dialogue".This last notion allows for example, according to Paulo Freire, toovercome the "educator-student" contradiction: "in this way the educatoris no longer only the one who educates, but also the one who is educatedwhile educating, in dialogue with the student who also educates, whilebeing educated."Paulo Freire's educational project then appears as it is: anemancipatory education, co-constructed by those who are in the positionof learners and whose aim is to identify patterns of oppression and'undo them, so as not to repeat them and in turn become dominant.
