Migration is omnipresent in Togo - as in many countries in West Africa.
Of the eight million Togolese women, two million live abroad - be it in
neighboring countries, in Europe, Turkey, the USA or Canada. This has to
do with the history of the country, which has been ruled autocratically
by the Gnassingbé family for over half a century. The brutal crackdown
on the democratic opposition over the years and the loss of hope for
political change were and are a reason why many people are leaving the
country. For young people in particular, it is almost impossible to get
a job that is commensurate with their training without relationships
with influential people in the state apparatus or the private sector. If
someone still has some money to build something, it is usually thanks to
relatives living abroad. Because of this experience, it is primarily the
well-educated youth from the cities who see no other prospect than to go
on an "adventure", as they say in Togo, i.e. to emigrate too. Added to
this are the effects of climate change, which farmers and herders in
particular feel every day. Over 50 percent of the population lives in
rural areas. For many of them, the climate crisis is an existential
question of survival, because agriculture is an immediate threat to
their livelihood.

In his lecture, Razakou Aboubakri will present these connections and
report on his work with deported migrants and young migration candidates.
