How can we build an alternative for a new society based on today'sreality? ---- How can we fight against individualism and exploitationand cultivate solidarity, when many people in our neighborhoods are busysurviving? Resistance to capitalism, the state, patriarchal and racistconditions is often organized from a radical left or anarchist movement,sometimes larger than other times, but often seen as a bubble ratherthan having roots in society. Although various tactics can make adifference in their own way, large-scale change is ultimately whatrevolutionaries want. But how - without creating new leaders? What arethe ideas for initiatives that have revolutionary potential?The regional trade union Solidarisch in Gröpelingen is of the opinionthat revolutionary change cannot be fought by a small radical leftscene, but by a broader class movement. This is why they have beenorganizing for several years in one of the poorest districts of Bremen.Their goal is to build an organized social movement anchored in poorneighborhoods, in which people organize themselves to fight for concreteimprovements in their living conditions, but also for fundamental changein society. They describe their practice as revolutionary grassrootswork (revolutionäre Basisarbeit) with the aim of building power frombelow as a vehicle for fundamental change. To do this, they combinelegal advice with general assemblies, street mobilizations, educationand the development of a culture of solidarity.During an information tour in the Dutch cities of Utrecht, Nijmegen,Groningen and Amsterdam, activists from Solidarisch in Gröpelingenreport on their concrete practices and experiences as well as thetheoretical considerations behind them.
