Dear,  In Kenya, countless donkeys are brutally and illegally slaughtered each year because of an insatiable demand in China for their meat and skins. More than 2 million donkeys die each year for this trade and there are only 44 million donkeys in the world. Unless the trade is stopped, DONKEYS COULD DIE OUT SOON. Credit: KSPCA In 2020, in collaboration with our local partners in Kenya and the Ministry of Agriculture, we successfully closed four donkey abattoirs. The slaughterhouses operated for just three years. IN 36 MONTHS, 15% OF KENYA'S DONKEYS WERE SLAUGHTERED. An alarming 1,200 donkeys were slaughtered DAILY. Thankfully, the Kenyan government banned the commercial slaughter of donkeys. However, we are now confronted with a new challenge, as the trade has shifted to illegal bush slaughter. It is imperative we stop this. We know that it's not easy, but the stakes are high. Donkeys are on the brink of extinction as their numbers rapidly decline. Fueled by the relentless Chinese donkey skin trade, donkeys are stolen and illegally slaughtered in the bush, their skins shipped off to China, AND their meat sold to unsuspecting consumers in Kenya.  Credit: NFA/Kimberly Khasiala Thousands of freshly slaughtered donkey carcasses stripped of their skins, meat and other internal organs have been discovered by the authorities over the past few months alone. Just last week, 200 stolen donkeys destined for slaughter were rescued and returned to their owners.  The cold-blooded criminals slaughtering donkeys for their skins are taking advantage of the high demand for meat in Nairobi, where unscrupulous high-end butcheries have been selling donkey meat disguised as cow meat.  The methods of donkey slaughter are unspeakably cruel – they are bludgeoned with axes and hammers and often even skinned alive.
