WAS is calling for and participating in this year's memorial
demonstration for the workers' uprising against the Austrofascistregime, which marked exactly 90 years ago on February 12, 2024. We callon all class-conscious workers to come to this demonstration, which willtake place on February 12th at 5:30 p.m. at Heiligenstadt train stationnear the Karl-Marx-Hof. Below we reproduce the entire call of thealliance. ---- 17:30 Heiligenstadt train station: "Day of the uprisingagainst Austrofascism" Commemoration means fighting!90 years ago, on February 12, 1934, the consistent sections of theworking class took up armed struggle against Dollfuß fascism. In almostall of Austria, workers opposed the establishment of the fascistdictatorship with weapons in their hands. This important chapter in thehistory of the workers' movement remains a taboo subject. In fact, thisfight is a reason to be proud of those who tried to break the fascistwave over Europe.For the first time since the fascists came to power in Italy, Germanyand Austria, workers rose up from the 12th to the 16th. February 1934armed against fascism. They decided to defend themselves against theattacks on their rights and structures and to risk an uprising againstthe threat of the fascist dictatorship. This resistance struggle was animportant event, not only for Austria, but for all of Europe.The uprising, which took place contrary to the discouraging instructionsof the SP leadership, remained isolated and without a chance. Withoutsupport from a general strike and without mass activity, the Februaryfighters were defeated by the Austrofascist front made up of the police,the armed forces and the home guards. Hundreds died in the fighting,others were murdered after a summary conviction by the Austro-Fascistjustice system.The day of the uprising against Austrofascism is an opportunity to cometo terms with the anti-Semitic and fascist roots of the ÖVP, as well asthe effects of Austrofascism on today's political landscape. Thisholiday is intended to contribute to a culture of remembrance thatrefers to Austrian fascism and its crimes and thus strengthensanti-fascist awareness in society. There needs to be a broad socialanchoring of the positive relationship to this anti-fascist struggle!There are still towns in Austria where squares are named after thefascist Dollfuß, but politicians and journalists close to the ruling ÖVPparty are reluctant to use the term Austrofascism. After 90 years, it ishigh time to make a clear commitment to the uprising of the mostdetermined parts of the working class in Austria. That's why we say:February 12th must become a public holiday as the “Day of the Uprisingagainst Austrofascism”!
