From November 30 to December 12, 2023, the 28th Conference of the
Parties (COP28) was held in Dubai. Two weeks of discussions which,
unsurprisingly, were neither engaging nor conclusive in providing
concrete solutions to climate disruption caused by industrial
activities. To fight global warming, the only possible solution is to
get out of capitalism. ---- Every year, with climate change, new records
are reached: record for the hottest year ever recorded, record for CO2
emissions, record for temperatures reached... Today, these are millions
of people who suffer its effects and this number will continue to grow
as the impact spreads throughout the Earth. The IPCC points out that
every 0.1°C rise in temperature causes the death of at least 100 million
people.

The increase in heat makes living and working conditions unsustainable
and is one of the sources of food insecurity and the increased frequency
of extreme and deadly weather events as well as the accelerated spread
of diseases. Faced with this, governments are holding COPs one after the
other, claiming to be seeking agreements to limit the ecological
disaster. But once again, COP28 showed itself incapable of proposing
real solutions and bowed and aligned itself with the demands of fossil
fuel lobbies.

COP28, serving fossil fuels
 From the choice of Sultan Al Jaber as president of COP28, CEO of the
Emirati oil group ADNOC and minister of industry, the lack of interest
given to the exit from fossil fuels was clear. Especially, when we see
the positions he has taken. Indeed, according to him, there is no
scientific evidence indicating that an exit from fossil fuels would make
it possible to limit the increase in global temperatures to 1.5°C and
without fossil fuels, we would return to the era of "cave" men[1]. These
are the positions that emerged victorious since, in the final consensus
document, there is no question of getting rid of fossil fuels, but only
of their reduction, and of limiting drilling.

It is only a small step, nothing ambitious or engaging, and this is
indeed the result of pressure from oil-producing countries in the
negotiations not to target fossil fuels[2]. To avoid offending the oil
industry, the solutions envisaged lie in technological innovations which
do not yet exist... Green capitalism has a bright future ahead of it:
two days after COP28, Total Énergies announced that it would sign a new
exploration permit in Suriname to develop an oil project producing
200,000 barrels per day[3].

The urgency of a new model of society
In essence, capitalism and ecology do not work together, the proof is
with this COP which is the one having brought together the most fossil
fuel lobbyists (six Total Énergies representatives accredited by
France!). Capitalism is the concentration of resources by a privileged
minority, which always seeks to accumulate more in order to enrich
itself further by establishing industrial activities that are harmful to
the environment.

It is vital to massively disseminate an anti-capitalist society project
where this minority no longer dictates the way in which economic,
agricultural and energy activities are established but the people who
live and work on these lands. They will be better able to manage
resources to meet the needs of society. The fight to preserve the
environment is also internationalist! Let us stand in solidarity with
the people who are experiencing deforestation and resource
monopolization for the benefit of Western companies, such as the Total
project in Uganda denounced by numerous associations such as Human
Rights Watch.
