On January 4, 1921, the first issue of a new union daily, Le Peuple, appeared, the organ of the General Confederation of Labor (CGT). Ittakes over from La Bataille - named La Bataille syndicaliste when it wascreated in 1911 - itself being the continuation of La Voix du peuple, created in 1900 and which was, until 1914, the official weekly of theCGT . ----- The objective of this daily is twofold. On the one hand, itis a necessary tool for the struggle, as affirmed by the generalsecretary of the CGT, Léon Jouhaux, in the editorial of the first issue, entitled "Our efforts and their goal":"We must therefore continue and increase the fight against capitalism, against the corporate powers united in the business consortiums whichdominate the big press and which bend those in power to theirwill.[...]The General Confederation of Labor created this body to put aweapon that has become indispensable into the hands of all workers. ".On the other hand, it allows us to position ourselves in relation to twoother daily newspapers, La Vie Ouvrière, the trade unionist magazine forminorities, created by Pierre Monatte in 1909, and L'Humanité, the dailynewspaper founded by Jean Jaurès in 1904, which became the The officialorgan of the Communist Party-French Section of the CommunistInternational (PC-SFIC) following the Tours Congress of December 1920and directed by Marcel Cachin, one of the founders of the PC-SFIC.The daily found itself in competition with La Vie Ouvrière, which hadbecome the official organ of the General Confederation of Unitary Labor(CGTU) after the split in 1921. The following year, Pierre Monatte leftthe review to found it a few years later, in 1925 , The ProletarianRevolution.Even if, in 1936, Le Peuple became the official confederal organ of thereunified CGT - La Vie Ouvrière continued its weekly publication - theabundance of union press titles did not allow it to achieve commercialsuccess; the publication becomes loss-making. Becoming a weekly at thevery beginning of the war, its publication was then suspended under Vichy.Le Peuple reappeared in September 1944 and was then led by tradeunionists from the CGT-Force Ouvrière tendency. No longer distributed onnewsstands from 1952, Le Peuple lost its status as the mass press organof trade unionism at the CGT, in favor of La Nouvelle Vie Ouvrière(NVO). It then becomes the bimonthly vector of the internal life of theCGT, intended for the organizations of the Confederation.
