"MAVROKOKKINI SIMIA" is a monthly informative political newspaper thatcirculates in the western suburbs of Athens. This sheet is a specialedition decided against the backdrop of current developments aroundhigher education and has been designed exclusively by the students ofthe Anarchist Saints Anargyro - Kamaterou Initiative. The aim of thepublication is to circulate in universities and schools, especiallythose based in the western suburbs, and it will also be made public forfree reading on the internet in the near future.The paper's editorials deal with issues regarding the plannededucational restructuring, on the occasion of the bill that has beenannounced by the government for the establishment of privateuniversities, but also more general issues regarding the institution ofeducation, the process of admission to schools, the continuum of reformsand the struggles of the student youth. Our common finding is that theunderstanding of the purposes of the new bill presupposes itsinterpretation in relation to the previous ones and its recognition as alink in a coherent chain of transformations, which is progressivelymoving towards a new neoliberal reality that does not only concernuniversities. In other words, it is part of a more comprehensiverestructuring process, which if in other areas of social and economiclife has progressed significantly, in the field of the university it hasencountered obstacles, which are expressed through student resistanceand the different relationships of power that traditionally characterizeit .Nevertheless, we should avoid the danger of an idealization of theuniversity that leads to a problematic logic of "defending" "how it is",in opposition to what it is trying to "be". Just as it would be amistake to see the new bill detached from the rest and outside the rapidsocial changes that are taking place, so we should not perceive theuniversity as a detached institution, which is in the hands of thestudents, even and symbolically. On the contrary, the university was andis a class institution, it is ideologically specific and functions as afield for the export of specialized personnel to meet the needs ofcapital's profitability. Public or not, guarded or not, the universityaims at the ideological formation of the young and the feeding of thecapitalist mode of production.
