WORLD WORLDWIDE INTERNATIONAL AGENCY Online News Journal Update - Lifting Up Anarchists We've Lost and Remembering Intentional Communities

Lifting Up Anarchists We’ve Lost and Remembering Intentional Communities:

Legacies and Lessons for the Future of Anarchism

In the short time since our last newsletter in the fall of 2023, we lost three anarchist luminaries: Klee Benally, Terry Bisson, and Benjamin Zephaniah. We stand in awe of their full lives and their ability to inspire so many. They leave incredible legacies and will be sorely missed!

Today is also the one-year anniversary of the passing of our comrade and Agency co-founder Jen Angel. We continue to honor Jen’s incredible legacy through the Jen Angel Anarchist Media Grant program, in partnership with the Institute for Anarchist Studies. Submissions are currently open and applications are due before March 31, 2024. Please visit the Jen Angel Anarchist Media Grant page on our website for more information.

In addition to lifting up anarchists we’ve lost, this winter we celebrated and learned from intentional anarchist communities like Fruitlands in Massachusetts in the 1840s and Home, Washington at the turn of the twentieth century.

Agency also published excerpts from multiple interviews with Fauda, the “first and largest anarchist movement in Palestine,” covering such topics as: the unfolding genocide in Gaza; “one-state” and “two-state” solutions, from an anarchist standpoint; George Floyd and International Anarchism; Hamas and the unification of militant resistance movements; and Anarcha-Feminism.

Freedom News: “Benjamin Zephaniah 1958-2023”

Benjamin lived an extraordinary life; he was a phenomenal person who created innovative art that positively impacted multiple generations. A poet, author, musician, performer and activist are just a few of the labels that capture the man, but if truth be told, he was a force of nature whose death leaves an enormous void on humanity that can only be partially quenched by the body of work he left behind for us. The Alcott Anarchist Experiment

JSTOR Daily: “The Alcott Anarchist Experiment”

There have been various utopian experiments over the last 200 years. From communes to cult compounds and new religions, different groups have tried to create alternative models of society. Bronson and Abigail Alcott (parents of Louisa May Alcott), for example, established such a community, called Fruitlands, in Massachusetts in the 1840s. Together with Bronson’s friend Charles Lane and their families, the Alcotts attempted to live out a vision of agrarian self-sufficiency. Read more>>

Statement from 12 indicted RICO co-defendants

Statement from 12 of the 61 people indicted on RICO charges in Atlanta: “Anarchism must not be criminalized”

“This RICO indictment is an attempt by the state to not only criminalize dissent, but a specific set of ideas which leads to dissent and offers an alternative framework to the state and capitalism. Anarchism, solidarity, mutual aid, and collectivism are specifically named in the indictment to make people afraid of these ideas, when the only people who are actually afraid of these collective ways of organizing are the politicians, cops, and corporations who seek to preserve their absolute power over humanity.” Read more>>
