On 16 December the municipal library of Niscemi was crowded with
activists, ordinary citizens and representatives of the Tunisian
community who had come to attend the Movement's conference on "Sicily at
war? Ukraine, Palestine... we are all involved". ---- A Tunisian girl
began by reading a text in solidarity with the population of Gaza, then
it was up to Antonio Mazzeo (interview recorded the day before) to draw
the picture of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and in particular
the involvement of Italy and Sicily, starting from the Sigonella base, a
bridgehead for sending weapons and ammunition to Israel and from MUOS,
which, as always, coordinates and manages the war missions of the USA
and their allies. Ukraine and Palestine are the terrain in which two
peoples are crushed with Western complicity, both by directly taking
part in the conflict with intelligence and weapons, and with
technological support. Mazzeo's speech was full of details, allowing us
to take note of the fact that these conflicts, and the massacre of the
people of Gaza and the West Bank, are facts that concern us very closely.

It was therefore up to Claudio Tamagnini, present in the West Bank in
the first month of the current conflict as part of an international
solidarity project, to go into detail and tell as a witness the
violence, intimidation, bans, expropriations of land and homes, to which
the Palestinian proletariat is subjected on a daily basis by fascist
settlers and army troops. An intervention with historical openings to
remind those present of the origins of Zionism, its development and the
current events that we all know.

Antonella Santarelli then described the questionnaire-investigation on
the condition of women in Niscemi that the Movement is carrying out; a
rich debate has therefore developed which has made it possible to
dissect other facets of the war issue: from the interference of the
state of Israel itself in the Italian university and research world, to
the boycott of Israeli products as a form of struggle, to the economic
interests in the sea at off the coast of Gaza. An overview was also
drawn of the eviction of the occupied student residence in Catania (see
the article to the side) and of the self-managed counseling centre.

Five days after the Movement's initiative, Niscemi woke up to police
sirens; this time the NO MUOS activists were not in the sights, but the
city mafia gang, dedicated to extortion, drug dealing and the control of
economic and commercial activities. Among the 29 arrested, on charges
ranging from the attempted murder of an entrepreneur who had refused to
pay protection money to the possession of weapons, there are well-known
and less well-known names from the Cosa Nostra families of Niscemo,
among which the owners of Piazza Calcestruzzi company, known in our
environment for having been the company awarded the contract for some of
the MUOS construction works; the same one who, deprived of the
anti-mafia certificate, continued work on the US base under the
protection of the police, who beat, stopped, arrested and reported the
activists who tried to prevent the workers from entering the
construction site with road blocks. We have always denounced the
interests of the mafia in the construction of the MUOS, and its role in
intimidating the population, so that the construction of the military
base could take place in complete tranquility. For the record, among
those arrested there is also a former policeman.

As we write these notes, an important garrison is underway in Palermo at
the headquarters of Leonardo SpA, once again to denounce its role as an
outpost of death, as an arms dealer and as an accomplice in all the
conflicts that have bloodied the planet. The demonstration, organized by
the Anti-War Assembly, with the adhesion of the NO MUOS Movement,
intends to once again reiterate full solidarity with the Palestinian
people. Leonardo's Palermo headquarters was the subject of a sit-in
during the regional demonstration on 21 October. Thanks to that
initiative, the inhabitants of the populous Guadagna neighborhood were
able to learn about the military purposes of the production of that plant.
