Last Monday, March 4th, all indigenous activists, militants from
territorial fronts and other social fighters, woke up to the sad news ofthe death of the young indigenous leader Cacique Merong Kamakã Mongoió.
Cacique Merong was the sixth generation of the Kamakã Mongoió family, of
the Pataxó Hãhãhãe people and was the leader who led the recovery of the
Kamakã Mongoió territory, in Córrego de Areia, in the municipality of
Brumadinho, in Minas Gerais. The resumption is set in territory of
interest to the mining company Vale.
Found with signs of hanging, the hypothesis of suicide was raised, a
version questioned by his family and community, in addition to
indigenous entities and other activists who maintained contact with
Merong, who claim that shortly before his death the Chief spoke of

The Kamakã Mongoió denounced the Vale company's mapping and exploration

Merong Kamakã Mongoió was a recognized leader in the entire indigenous
movement and was active in struggles from north to south of the country,
being an important ally of the Guarani M'bya in Mato Preto and Maquiné
in Rio Grande do Sul, of the Xokleng-Klongui, in São Francisco of Paula,
also in RS, of the Kaingang people in Florianópolis, in addition to
