Almost three years after the death of Fares Shgater during a police
check in Livorno, the only trial - now almost concluded - is thatagainst those who demonstrated for truth and justice. ---- The LivornoAnarchist Federation and the Libertarian Anarchist Collective demand theacquittal of the accused and return to demanding truth and justice forFares Shgater. ---- The last hearing of the trial following thedemonstration on 26 April 2021 which called for truth and justice forFares Sghater, who died in Livorno at the age of 25 during a policecheck, drowned in the night between 24 and 25 April 2021 in the FossoReale in front of the Fortezza Nuova. The trial sees two participants inthe demonstration accused, including one of our comrades. He cannot die during a police check. In these three years theinstitutions and the official media have no longer given any response tothe request for truth and justice forcefully advanced by thedemonstrations that were held in the city immediately after the death ofthis young man. Regardless of the specific facts, it is clear that theracist policies established in Italy by successive governments over thelast thirty years have created a situation in which a foreign citizenrisks, during a police check, that his life suddenly plummets as aresult of a repatriation order, an arrest, detention in a CPR, but alsoblackmail, harassment and violence on the part of the agents. The story of Fares' death was soon forgotten and removed. The only thingthat seems to have progressed in recent years is the trial of those whodemonstrated to shed light on a death that had shaken the city. Ademonstration that managed to express on a political level the angerthat Fares' family, friends and compatriots felt. The city right, confirming its provocative character, its racism and class contempt, organized, with the sole aim of stoking tensions, acounter-demonstration a few meters from where the demonstration forFares was held. The latter was then held without any particularincidents, so much so that a delegation of demonstrators was evenreceived by the police commissioner. The response of the institutions, however, was to put the demonstratorson trial. A few days after the demonstration, a young compatriot ofFares was stopped, locked in a CPR and repatriated to his nativecountry, Tunisia. For all we know he may not even be aware that he isbeing charged in a trial in Livorno. The other defendant is one of ourcomrades, accused of having collaborated in writing a banner that read"Truth and justice for Fares, No racism, No police violence" and, in onecorner, "acab".A trial for contempt of a public official on the charge of havingcollaborated in writing a banner would almost seem ridiculous if thistrial did not call into question freedom of expression. An unacceptablecensorship which, in the event of a conviction, would become a real caseof repression.Livorno Anarchist FederationLibertarian Anarchist Collectivehttps://collettivoanarchico.noblogs.org/post/2024/03/03/a-processo-per-lo-striscione-verita-e-giustizia-per-fares-solidarieta-agli-imputati/_________________________________________A - I N F O S N E W S S E R V I C EBy, For, and About AnarchistsSend news reports to A-infos-en mailing listA-infos-en@ainfos.caSPREAD THE INFORMATION
