Considerations around the fight for the former Pavan - The fight carried
out for a year and a half by the "Together for San Giacomo" Committee
together with the "Campo Libero" solidarity network has imposed on the
city debate the question of the destination of the area where once there
was the Pavan restaurant with an adjoining garden. ---- What should have
been just a small issue, of a single district, has become yet another
political case that pits the municipal council against popular
committees and a growing portion of the population. ---- The story of
Via Frausin is identical to that of other situations around the city:
more or less megalomaniac projects, launched completely from above, no
listening to requests from below (we must recognize a certain coherence
in them, they don't even do fake like years ago), no second thoughts,
not even a facade. At Palazzo Cheba they are convinced that they govern
with a sort of imperial mandate.
Having never had any faith in the institutions, we are not too surprised
by this, but we must admit that the current government is doing
everything it can to break new records of arrogance and
authoritarianism: it was a difficult competition but it no longer takes
first prize from it Nobody.
What is finally changing is the will to oppose, to organize
collectively, to try to resist together to build a different city.
The emergence of citizen committees in many districts, but also of other
collective realities on individual issues, is making the struggles in
the city take a leap in quality.
We believe that the first steps, especially in this last year, have been
significant.
Solidarity and mutual support networks are emerging, and collective
actions are starting to put the opponent in question in difficulty, be
it the Municipality, the Asugi or the Region.
Collecting signatures, appeals, press conferences, legal appeals,
although they are tools to be used and which we certainly do not want to
dismiss as useless, are not enough on their own.
To truly worry those who want to impose on us a commodified city,
totally subservient only to mass tourism, in which only those who have
the money to pay for social and health services that are increasingly
lacking and increasingly privatized are well off, we need to mobilize in
the streets and get in the way by practicing direct action, in the most
collective and shared forms possible.
The actions of disturbing the core drilling for the cable car in autumn,
the occupation of the clinic in via San Marco in November and the
blockade for a day of the construction site in via Frausin are a good
signal for the struggles in the city.
We certainly don't want to mythologize or overestimate these moments,
but we want to try to grasp their profound meaning: concretely
disturbing the drivers is possible.
All these actions are part of collective paths of struggle that see
broad and transversal participation, a wealth that must be preserved and
valorised.
Disputes can be won by managing to be many (which is absolutely
fundamental), while at the same time building communities of struggle
based on solidarity and self-organisation.
The direct action carried out by the comrade the other day in via
Frausin is not a "heroic" act, it is just a concrete example of the
things that we can collectively achieve together.
We are accumulating experiences, expanding relationships between people,
increasing confidence in what we can do.
Just as the ex Pavan affair certainly did not end with the hasty
demolition of the building, all the other struggles are still there on
the table.
Whoever governs the city, behind his brazen arrogance, is showing more
and more signs of nervousness.
It is up to all of us to ensure that the well-being of people and the
environment is finally a reality at the center of a truly supportive and
inclusive city.
