In the last few days, information has reached our ears about the
imminent evacuation of the Evangelismos Occupy, just a few days after
the evacuations on Lofo Kasteli in Chania, in an all-out attack against
the squatters in Crete. The possibility of a new business was something
for which we also had indications from the agreement between the
University of Crete and the National Technical University of Athens for
studies on the building, at a cost of EUR744,000. Now we have solid and
concrete information about it, as after 22 years of struggle, Evangelism
is part of the society of Heraklion, with deep roots and networking in
it, and we are able to learn and know everything.
When need becomes history
On our part, we make it clear that we are ready and prepared. We will
wait, resist and respond to any attack we receive. Anyone who thinks it
is simply about a building and its inhabitants does not know the history
of the city and its people, does not know the history of movements and
uprisings. Evangelism is not just a house, it is the center of the
anarchist/anti-authoritarian space of Heraklion and as such has been, is
and will be a solid social barrier against power and repression,
capitalism and the state. It is the story of the people who were and are
being housed here, who were arrested here, who were injured by cops
here, who participated in dozens of rallies and actions that take place
here. It is the story of the marches that ended up here many times with
the matazis reaching the door. They are the 2,500 protesters in
Eleftheria Square on the day of the municipal elections, when the cops
realized that there are so many of us that they can't do anything and
Kalokairinos and Karamalakis locked themselves in fear in their
surrounded offices. It is the practical opposition to the stupid logic
of ownership that wants homeless people, homeless needs and desires in
front of empty and unused houses fortified with sheet metal and
concrete. It's the fair riots and chaotic situation in the
tourist-filled city center after the September evacuation. It is
twenty-two years of social struggles, a snapshot of the eternal class
war. It is the war against fascism, the reason why the Golden Dawn did
not set foot in the center of the city when it was supported by the
state, the parastate, the canals, the church and the capitalists. It is
an embankment in tourism and gentrification, and the practical support
of local environmental struggles. It is the mutual aid networks that
were housed and will be housed here, and the actions of solidarity with
immigrant women and their struggles. It is the starting point of the
counter-gatherings against misogynists, racists and homophobes, who, as
many times as they tried to gain space in the city, found us against
them. It is the feminist struggles and the daily battle to eliminate
gender discrimination. It is the place where the rage riots when the
cops kill, when the fascists murder, every day we understand again and
again that if we don't attack they lead us to misery, depression and
impoverishment. It is a center of organization and struggle against the
all-out assault that society receives. It is necessity that becomes history.
Because it is all these, the seizure of Evangelism is neither legal nor
illegal. It is the living history of the vanguard of the city's social
movement. And for that he is being targeted once again. As all the
struggles that develop are targeted, in the streets, universities,
prisons and workplaces.
Twenty-two years now, various anonymous and named cops, city bosses,
prosecutors and bailiffs, Contakis and Summers, have tried to attack us.
Various falling stars of power who, as they appeared, will also
disappear and be replaced by others. But we will stay, the squatters
will not be taken even if they die.
We call on the struggling local community to frame the fight to defend
the Occupy of Evangelism, as it did in the period after its evacuation.
At the same time, let's strengthen together the social struggles that
take place in the other fields, such as the one against the
-intentional- dismantling of hospitals.
This text constitutes, in addition to all the rest, a nationwide call to
comrades and comrades to descend on Heraklion in the next period and to
strengthen with whatever forces they have the militant defense of the
occupation of Evangelismos.
