The worst flooding in living memory has just hit Kazakhstan.
It's completely devastated one of the most important re-introduction projects on the planet, just as the critical phase was about to begin.
The importance of the project cannot be overstated. It aims to bring the world's last truly wild horse — a species called Przewalski's horse — back to a vital safe haven in Kazakhstan.
These horses have already been through unimaginable turmoil, with decades of hunting and habitat loss tearing through their populations. Only 178 of these marvellous animals are still alive in the wild, so if the project falls through, the consequences could be harrowing.
But, after over a decade of tireless work by our partnership, the Altyn Dala Conservation Initiative, the species' natural habitat was being restored and poaching threats were eliminated, paving the way for their re-introduction.
The end was in sight. The horses were ready to be transported. A bright future was beginning to appear.
Now everything is at risk.
The storm has, quite literally, rolled in — leaving untold damage in its wake, including the destruction of a mission-critical field station.
Without this building, the project can't be completed, and Przewalski's horse could face a harrowing future.
We urgently need to raise the funds to reconstruct it, or the entire project will fail.
This would not only be devastating for the horses themselves, but the whole ecosystem. As one of the few creatures with the power to dig and move ground, they play a pivotal role in helping to provide other animals with access to water and vegetation, which is extremely important after heavy snowfall or when very dry.
But, with your help, it doesn't have to end this way. You can save them.
If — through your donation today — Fauna & Flora can raise €11,845 to support the rebuild of the vital field station destroyed by the floods, then they can help reverse the damage done.
This is an absolute emergency — but if every person who reads this donates just €21, the facilities can be repaired before the whole relocation has to be cancelled.
And rest assured, 100% of all donations go directly towards the €11,845 that this horse's survival chances so desperately rely on, and an anonymous donor has generously agreed to match every donation until the €11,845 is reached.
Please, donate now and help save Przewalski's horse.
