May Day is the date of struggle for the entire working class. 138 years
ago, on this day, workers began a major strike denouncing exploitation
and demanding a reduction in working hours in the USA. On May 4, a large
demonstration organized by unions in Chicago was violently repressed,
ending with dozens of protesters murdered or arrested by the police.
Eight leaders of the movement, all anarchists, were arrested and
sentenced to death as a result of a judicial farce involving the State
and employers - four of those arrested were taken to the gallows, and a
fifth took his own life. These became known as the "Chicago Martyrs" and
that is why we celebrate May Day as working class day.
In Brazil, there is no shortage of reasons to fight. There are 8 million
people unemployed, and another 40 million in the informal sector - many
working beyond the 8-hour day, on odd jobs, through apps or other means.
Even among formal workers, the general rule is precariousness, whether
in the private sector, in the public sector or in outsourced companies.
Bad working conditions, frozen wages or rising below inflation,
overload, harassment, etc. Upstairs, Lula-Alckmin's broad-front
government shows that it has no commitment to the urban and rural
working class, and applies the economic policy of tightening and
spending freezes (Fiscal Framework) that only serves the dominant
classes. , while distributing crumbs and not combating the people's real
problems.
We reached the month of May with important strikes organized by public
education workers in Federal Institutes and Universities, demanding
better working conditions, salary adjustments and the revocation of
ordinances approved by the previous government. However, part of the
left, even that which calls itself socialist and revolutionary, is in
the wake of Lula-Alckmin's Broad Front government, which has the
bourgeoisie and part of the right as its partners, even discouraging
legitimate and historical instruments of the oppressed classes.
(strikes, protests, strikes, occupations, etc.) or trying to stop the
legitimate demands of these workers.
During this period, some of the unions act as if we had reasons to
celebrate. It's no wonder there are shows, raffles, events with
celebrities and empty speeches. Unions must be entities fighting to
achieve better living conditions for the working class, and not
instruments to deceive people and serve as a transmission belt for
parties and governments. We stand alongside the trade unions that remain
combative and maintain class independence from the bosses and the State;
We are committed to organizing the oppressed classes into popular
movements and unions that increasingly have a classist and combative
character, that have class independence and a perspective of
revolutionary transformation of society.
Internationally, the situation is also full of uncertainty, with the
rise of the extreme right around the world and turmoil in Latin America,
including Milei's ultraliberal government in Argentina, the massacre of
the Palestinian people by the state of Israel, and countless other
conflicts in several countries. . Amid the game of interests of
imperialism, we believe that it is the oppressed classes in struggle
that can assert their interests, to defeat the extreme right and
overthrow the capitalist-statist system of misery and death.
Over the last century and a half, millions of workers have dedicated
their lives to having 8 hours of work, 8 hours of rest and 8 hours of
leisure. These demands remain current as long as exploitation and
oppression exist, which is why we raise the banner of Libertarian
Socialism. Many died for this, like the Chicago Martyrs, all anarchists,
who were unjustly condemned for the massive protests of 1886. On this
May Day, the tribute we can pay to all these people is by taking their
example, not sustaining illusions in the government or in employers,
expanding rights through direct action, for a radical transformation of
society.
For a May Day independent of governments and bosses!
Long live the working class! Long live the Chicago Martyrs!
For the Social Revolution and Libertarian Socialism!
