To "celebrate" his hundred days in government, Gabriel Attal went to
Essonne, to Viry-Châtillon, to deliver "a speech on authority at the
heart of the Republic", where, two weeks earlier, a teenager from
15-year-old Shemseddine had been beaten to death. ---- It did not smell
like the announcement of a massive investment plan for public schools
(what the teachers on strike in 93 have been demanding for several
weeks), nor of a desire to invest massively for reduce social
inequalities. To tell the truth, we expected nothing... and it was even
worse.
Once again Attal sought inspiration in the worst proposals of the
reactionary right: confinement of students ten hours a day in schools,
"disruptors" will be sanctioned on their exam grades - which is
prohibited by the Education Code -, or to impose the standing up (at
attention?) of students when an adult enters a class and he engaged the
same evening in an unprecedented questioning of the principle of
reduction of penalties for minors, an old reactionary refrain.
This fierce desire to bring popular youth into line: to enlist them via
the SNU or to sanction the slightest misstep, is a sign of weakness,
authoritarianism and no authority. A government that is so afraid of
young people is a government in dire straits. The capitalists need
docile workers, Attal is only implementing their economic and social
program. This month of May, let's resound with another music made of
rebellion, struggles and the future for our youth. Down with barrack
schools! Long live socialism, long live self-management! UCL, April 21, 2024
