As representatives of OZZ Inicjatywa Pracownicza OZZ Workers' Initiative
operating at universities and scientific institutions, we sympathize
with the people leading the sit-in protest at the "Kamionka" Student
Dormitory and express support for their demands. ---- In the face of the
deepening housing crisis, which particularly severely affects students,
the decision of the authorities of the Jagiellonian University to sell
the "Kamionka" dormitory is incomprehensible and shocking. This is
another example of the anti-student, anti-social policy of Polish
universities, following the attempt to sell the "Jowita" dormitory in
Poznan by the Adam Mickiewicz University authorities. This forces
students to pay astronomical prices for renting an apartment or room on
the private market. This entails the need to work more and more, often
in precarious conditions. In extreme cases, this affects the decision to
withdraw from studies. The authorities of Polish universities not only
do not provide their students with the social security necessary to
study, but also actively influence the deterioration of their living
conditions. The desire for profit cannot prevail over securing the basic
need of students, which is the need for a safe shelter.
Together with the students of the Jagiellonian University, we demand
that the University authorities meet the following demands:
Immediate withdrawal from plans to sell DS Kamionka;
Immediate resumption of operations of two buildings of the "Kamionka"
dormitory;
Immediate withdrawal from plans to sell Bursa Jagiellonska;
Presenting a comprehensive housing strategy that will significantly
increase the availability of places in dorms and secure financial
resources for this purpose. Such a strategy should include, among
others: project of building new student houses on the Ruczaj Campus,
making the Raclawicka dormitory available for students of the
Jagiellonian University and increasing the number of places in four
dormitories managed by the Bratniak Foundation;
Assurances from the university authorities that no person will bear any
legal or disciplinary liability for participating in the sit-in strike.
We also condemn calling the police for a peaceful protest and appeal for
the Jagiellonian University authorities to refrain from using the
intervention of security services against their own students. Let us
remember that it is for them that the university carries out its
mission. At the same time, once again, we demand joint action by the
authorities of academia, local governments and the state to ensure
decent conditions for studying and working at universities and
scientific institutes. We also call on all members of the academic
community to show solidarity with students fighting for fundamental
things and to support this fight.

Statement of the occupants of DS Kamionka
in the face of attempts by the Jagiellonian University authorities to
break up the student strike using the police
On May 17, at 4 p.m., as students associated with OZZ Inicjatywa
Pracownicza, we started a peaceful sit-in strike in the Kamionka
Dormitory building. The main demand of the occupation is to restore the
functioning of the student dormitory.
This action is due to the exhaustion of other means of negotiation. The
rector did not recognize us as representing the interests of the student
community and sent us to the local government, which ignored our demands
regarding the Kamionka Dormitory. We had no other way to continue than
to take direct action.
At 6:30 p.m., a delegation representing the university authorities
appeared in the Kamionka Dormitory, consisting of the deputy chancellor
for real estate affairs, Marek Ulinski, and the spokesman of the
Jagiellonian University, Adam Koprowski. The authorities tried to
persuade us to meet the rector behind closed doors, outside the Kamionka
premises. Our position remains unchanged - we do not leave the building,
we negotiate collectively and transparently.
At. At 11.30 p.m., the first police car appeared at DS Kamionka. One of
the policemen entered the building and accused us of violating the
privacy of the home. We were given an ultimatum: either we start
negotiating with the officers alone, or "such forces will come here that
we will drag you out of this building and you will be held criminally
responsible." The policeman confirmed that we would be removed from the
building by force. The officer wanted to force us to have conversations
that were not recorded in any way and without witnesses, through a
single-person representation. He claimed that he was acting with the
consent and authorization of the rector, but refused to provide it in
writing, claiming that "he could arrange it immediately."
In the next minutes, about 5 police cars appeared in front of the
building. However, the police refrained from taking any action against
us and contented themselves with talking to the administration employees
in front of the building, waiting for the commander's arrival. It should
be emphasized here that we receive full support from the building's
administration.
After we publicized the situation, MP Daria Gosek-Popiolek, Krakow city
councilor Aleksandra Owca, employees of the Jagiellonian University and
other witnesses and the media appeared in front of the building.
We consider the decision of the university authorities to be scandalous
and the actions taken by the police to be unlawful. The officer
delegated to conduct negotiations with us entered the university
premises despite the lack of authorization from the rector's authorities
and misled us by claiming that he had such authorization. When asked to
submit it in writing, he declared that he would "sort it out" soon. Such
a document was never shown to us, and during the parliamentary
intervention we learned that it was not the rector, but the deputy
chancellor who notified the police and that the notification was
submitted in the form of a telephone notification about the suspicion of
committing a crime of violating home privacy by the strikers. According
to the information known to us at the moment, the entity authorized to
authorize the police to enter the university premises has not issued the
required authorization.
We demand explanations for this:
from the university authorities, why they decided to send the police
against us, who made such a decision and whether it was consulted with
the rector and chancellor of the Jagiellonian University;
from the police, why the officer responsible for negotiations misled us
and violated the university's autonomy by entering the Kamionka
Dormitory premises, despite the lack of appropriate authorization.
Signed,
students occupying the Kamionka Dormitory
