WORLD WORLDWIDE US USA - New York NY - New York City NYC - the city THE CITY - City nursing homes miss mandated inspections, budget deal, MTA plans
Dear New Yorkers,
A review by THE CITY has found that 73% of New York City nursing homes have not been inspected within the past 15 months.
Federal law says nursing homes are supposed to be inspected by state health authorities at least once within that time frame. But in New York City, a severe shortage of inspectors has delayed most inspections beyond the legal limit.
Nearly 60% of state Department of Health nursing home inspector positions were vacant in 2022, according to a U.S. Senate investigation, up from just 4% a decade before — giving New York one of the highest vacancy rates in the nation.
The result is that 120 of the 163 federally designated nursing facilities in the five boroughs had not had an inspection within the required time period as of June 1 — and 33 had not had an inspection since 2021.
Even facilities with multiple previous violations have gone unchecked. Patient advocates have been pressing for years for states to face penalties for when they fail to meet the federal standards for the frequency of inspections.
