Feminist and anarchist politics in times of crisis: experiences,
debates, ideas ---- Antje Schrupp - Feminism and anarchism have theirhorizons outside of parliamentary and constitutional structures, as they
do not strive for emancipation within the given order, but for a
radically different way of living together. At the same time, a
democratic constitutional state offers a much better environment for
feminist and anarchist engagement than autocratic regimes and fascist
tyranny. How can politics become possible in an environment in which
patriarchal and racist positions are once again openly part of the
debate and even the minimum standards of the rule of law are being
watered down? The lecture offers suggestions for this and draws on
historical experiences. One focus is on the USA between 1870 and 1920. A
period in which there was no talk of equality and patriarchal and racist
violence was socially accepted. At the same time, this period produced a
large number of anarcho-feminist voices, including Victoria Woodhull,
Lucy Parsons, Voltairine de Cleyre, Emma Goldman and others. Their
debates - which were also controversial among themselves - are more
relevant today than ever before.
