The murder of Satnam Singh, an agricultural laborer in the Pontine
countryside, hired "off the books" (i.e. illegally) and paid EUR4 anhour, was a regular immigrant. Having arrived in Italy with a regular
passport, he is part of that movement of workers recruited in India and
Bangladesh dedicated to agriculture in the Latina area which makes up
for the lack of local labor unavailable to be cooked in the greenhouses
that teem in the area, with a starvation wages, without health and
welfare guarantees, but fueled by amphetamines to withstand inhuman
rhythms and working conditions.
It is no coincidence that the Municipality of Latina is managed by a
centre-right council, with a mayor from the Brothers of Italy and
councilors from the League who take care of administering a large and
over-exploited migrant community, forced to live in dilapidated, private
of every right. Yet the Ministry of the Interior knows this territory
well, monitors it in terms of security, even religious affiliation, the
relationships that those who live there maintain with their country of
origin, controlling the continuous flows of workers who feed the market
of work through the "flow decrees". in order to ensure that agricultural
businesses in the area had the slaves essential for the supply of the
necessary low-cost labor needed to serve the Roman agricultural market.
What is striking about when it happened is the particular cruelty, it is
the contempt for the pain and life of a human being even if
unfortunately this murder is one of the many that characterizes the very
frequent deaths at work which are always cruel, always inhumane,
certainly unacceptable, which every day dot the lives of workers, the
last in the country.
