In conditions of a deep overall systemic crisis, the state capitalist
system accelerates restructurings that target every manifestation ofsocial life, devaluing basic social needs, work, health, education,
housing, transportation. The state, faithful to the neoliberal model
followed since the years of the memorandum in the Greek area, continues
to intensify social and class exclusions and to increase the cost of
living at even more intensive rates, while uninsured and precarious
work, flexible working hours, intensification of work, privatization and
management by the bosses of all our basic needs are signs that respond
to capitalism's need to exacerbate class inequality and completely
devalue our lives.
The anti-social state policies imposed on the public health system move
in exactly this direction of systematic dissolution, abandonment,
commercialization and of course the intensifying exclusions for the
social and class base. The thousands of dead during the pandemic as a
result of the conscious choice of the state administrators to not
substantially strengthen the already saturated hospitals and the public
health system as a whole are an image of the future organized and
planned by the political and economic bosses for the social need of
health and care.
The systematic degradation of the NHS has led to understaffing resulting
in the postponement of scheduled surgeries due to a lack of anesthetists
or nursing staff. In response to the ever-increasing need to recruit
qualified staff, the ministry simply transfers staff from one health
facility to another, creating more problems for patients than it tries
to solve, driving them to private health providers. In fact, the
murderous consequences of state policies that lead to the dissolution of
the NHS are even more evident in the periphery, where social needs are
impossible to meet due to understaffed infrastructure and people are
losing their lives.
This is the context in which the privatization of mental health services
is being attempted today, with the dismantling of addiction structures
being the icing on the neoliberal cake. Thus, the Ministry of Health is
planning the abolition of the psychiatric hospitals of Attica and
Thessaloniki, in order to give even more space to the development of
private beds, which already number 4,700, in contrast to the 900 beds in
the NHS. In addition, the creation of NPID for drug addiction with the
abolition of treatment and reintegration programs, such as KETHEA,
"18ANO", "ARGO", "DIAPLOUS", "IANOS", the prevention centers. This is
yet another aspect of the anti-social state restructuring which of
course completely ignores the needs of mental health recipients, carers
and their families, while the situation will be even more difficult for
vulnerable groups and the uninsured.
The deterioration of the public health system began with the closing of
hospitals, permanent shortages of personnel and equipment, the
discrediting of primary care as well as the implementation of flexible
labor relations leading to the burnout of health workers. The attempted
merger of mental health services, the dismantling of addiction
structures are key components of the anti-social enterprise of
dismantling public health. We realize that no system of exploitation and
oppression is going to care about our health and survival, except to the
extent that we are useful to its reproduction. We put forward class
solidarity, mutual aid and the need for collective protection of society
and we join our voices with the health workers who claim the
strengthening of public health in the already saturated and lacking
public hospitals, in the face of anti-social bills.
Against the state and capitalist system that has nothing more to offer
than poverty, impoverishment and death to sharpen the social and class
resistances for the demolition of the bankrupt world of power. To fight
collectively and from below against our oppressors, to strengthen and
guard the social and class resistances that are the target of repression
and to organize new ones. The fight of the health workers is a fight for
a dignified care, treatment and support of the recipients of health
services, their families and their communities. It is a struggle for all
of us!
