Dear New Yorkers,

Following weeks of news about multiple federal investigations, resignations and planned exits by top administration leaders — and a growing chorus of calls for him to resign — Mayor Eric Adams has been indicted.

What we know so far: The indictment is on federal criminal charges and is still sealed, as first reported by the New York Times.

Sources familiar with the matter told THE CITY late Wednesday night that Adams is being charged with acting as an unregistered foreign agent for taking actions in his official capacity after receiving donations from foreign nationals.

After the news broke, the mayor took a defensive tone: “I always knew that If I stood my ground for New Yorkers that I would be a target — and a target I became,” he said in a statement. “If I am charged, I am innocent and I will fight this with every ounce of my strength and spirit.”

The indictment is without precedent in New York City’s history. As our look at the record shows, charges have never been brought against a sitting mayor in the modern city’s 170 years — including the notoriously corrupt reign of Tammany Hall.

Only one mayor, Jimmy Walker, resigned while under investigation, in 1932, but even he was never charged.

What happens now?

There is no rule against the mayor serving his term out while under indictment. But there are two ways Adams could be removed. Here’s our guide on how he can be forced out of office, and what might happen after he resigns.

Thanks, as always, for reading. Make it a great Wednesday night.

Love,

THE CITY
