Good morning,

Today’s meeting of leaders of political groups and EU parliament president Roberta Metsola is generating lots of buzz. Finally, we'll know if the hearings of commissioner designates will begin mid-October or early November.

The meeting will also set the common questions for all nominees and decide which committees will take on specific responsibilities — which has already triggered clashes between some committee chairs seeking a more pivotal role in some of the hearings.

But all eyes will be on UK prime minister Keir Starmer’s visit to Brussels, as he is expected to meet European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen to discuss “the reset of EU-UK relations”. For a bit of background there, read Benjamin Fox's analysis from earlier this month.
