For many, the name Catherine Ribeiro means absolutely nothing. But for
some, it is with a heavy heart that we learned, on August 23, of the
death of the one who will remain a major figure in French-speaking song.
Committed, Catherine Ribeiro has always been. ---- In the 1960s, she
was, in the middle of the yé-yé period, a successful young singer. She
appeared as such in 1966 in the famous photo by Jean-Marie Périer for
the magazine Salut les copains, the most iconic image of popular song of
those years. But Catherine Ribeiro felt cramped in the status of pop
singer and dreamed of more freedom.
She joined the Internationalist Communist Organization in the late 1960s
and met Patrice Moullet, a musician and, above all, a sound manipulator
and inventor of instruments. Catherine's poems and Patrice's music
formed the soundtrack for a new decade of music, marked by political,
poetic and sonic commitment. Although the press superbly ignored the
group Catherine Ribeiro + Alpes, it nevertheless released 11 albums,
ranging from progressive rock to experimental music, and performed over
500 times in concert.
In 1977, Catherine Ribeiro was part of the first edition of the
Printemps de Bourges, which was then the festival of "the other song".
She then began a solo career that led her to become a figure in French
song, including covers of Brel and Piaf in her singing routine.

After several years of eclipse, Catherine returned to the stage in the
early 1990s for concerts mixing songs from Catherine Ribeiro + Alpes,
her solo albums and covers. In the halls mingled several generations of
spectators. Today, Catherine Ribeiro is gone. For some, there will
remain these memories of concerts and then songs whose lyrics chanted by
a rebellious and strong voice are as many hymns to revolt.
