The recent and ongoing attacks by the Israeli army (IDF) in Lebanon that
have caused thousands of deaths, including hundreds of children, andthat are added to the over 40,000 victims, mostly civilians, the
indescribable destruction and an enormous number of displaced persons,
all dramatic consequences of the invasion of Gaza by the IDF, are
accompanied by equally dramatic news coming from Ukraine on the
continuation of the war according to which, from European and American
sources, peace is defended and can only be achieved by increasing the
supply of weapons to the Zelensky government, to bring the Russian
aggressor to reason even at the cost of increasing the figure of
200,000 fallen soldiers and civilians in Ukraine and Russia.
But the peace that must be obtained immediately in every war scenario
damages both the interests of the arms producers and those of the states
involved in the conflicts and, in addition to the hypocritical
declarations of the great imperialist powers, war is no longer a local
but a generalized phenomenon, which is moving towards a dramatic phase
of expansion, in an "escalation" that risks irreversibility.
In fact, there are over 50 conflicts that bloody the planet, causing
death, destruction and immense suffering to the populations involved,
who are increasingly abandoned to themselves.
The strategy of unloading the costs of capitalist crises onto the
subaltern classes, pursued state by state and with multinational
agreements, is no longer sufficient to effectively defend the interests
of the imperialist powers fighting for control of the world market:
local conflicts are becoming generalized and risk dragging the world
into an ever-widening conflict, as has already happened in the course
of 20th-century history with the outbreak of the two previous
imperialist world wars, as war is an instrument of capital for resolving
its own crises.
In such a polarized context, there are no imperialisms with which to
side more or less critically to combat other imperialist phenomena
erroneously considered more lethal.
There are no acceptable imperialisms, perhaps according to the logic of
the lesser evil: the European Union itself has now thrown off the mask
of a long-pursued good-natured imperialism to become, at a continental
level, the zealous executor of US imperialist claims albeit with
countless contradictions, deriving from the demonstrated inability to
build effective levels of unity for which, once again we affirm that the
European Union has not yet reached the necessary level of imperialist
maturity: hence its weakness and its subordination. As has already
happened in previous historical periods, economic crises that promote
social degradation and the disintegration of the class fabric, result in
more or less generalized conflicts that erode bourgeois democracy
itself, diverting it towards authoritarian horizons, which is what
happens in the USA, Israel, England and in the "good-natured" European
Union which, election after election, sees the affirmation of both the
degradation of the old bourgeois conservative parties and of the social
democratic ones, formations that are now completely similar and very
active in pursuing neoliberal and militarist policies but, above all,
sees the alarming growth of far-right formations capable of undermining
government positions, together with the military who come out of the
barracks to invade society in all its spheres, grafting the lethal germ
of militarism that, in the absence of internationalist awareness, does
not hesitate to take root at a mass level with all its devastating
consequences.
A look at Italy
In Emilia Romagna, recent rains have devastated entire territories that
were invaded by water just a year ago. The issue is not only to grasp
the evidence, that is, that, in addition to the proclamations, nothing
has been done in this entire period, but in the more objective and
concrete observation that this government, together with the previous
ones, has knowingly failed to define and pursue clearly, and therefore
with appropriate and effectively managed funding, choices and programs
for the maintenance and protection of the territories by diverting
funding, moreover drained by general taxation, cutting wages within the
framework of the generalization of precarious and poor work also at the
expense of security, from essential public services (education, health,
assistance, social security, public transport), towards large-scale
useless and harmful works and increasing the already considerable
military expenditure, including aid to Ukraine: according to the recent
guidelines of the European Union which, voted in the substantial aspects
by some government and opposition parties, indicate to allocate 0.25% of
the annual GDP to the "Ukrainian cause": for Italy, it's another 5
billion a year.
The Meloni government, in keeping with its roots dating back to the MSI
and never denied, intends to take precautions regarding the
manifestation of protests against its own actions and, also to curry
favor with the most reactionary sectors of the electorate, passes a
bill, the 1660, better known as the "security decree", which with its
liberticidal contents, as we document below in this issue of "il
CANTIERE", demonstrates how "constitutional conquests" can be
circumvented, distorted and even suppressed when the preeminent
interests of the social classes in power are at stake, precisely because
bourgeois democracy carries in its soft belly the causes of
authoritarian degeneration, as history bitterly demonstrates in
countless circumstances. On the other hand, all the struggles and
mobilizations in the workplace, those against war and environmental
devastation, student struggles and those for gender equality and for the
full citizenship of LGBTQIA+ subjects, together with all the other forms
of opposition, are unable to connect to effectively oppose the
employers' and government's policies of aggression against the living
conditions of our class.
The only guarantee
The phase we are living through sees the affirmation of epochal changes:
the economic, productive, political, institutional and social structures
are changing, describing a very complex and at times unprecedented
phase, characterized as it is by enormous difficulties that are
manifesting themselves in the present and by a disarming uncertainty for
the future, in a discouragement that unfortunately also involves many
comrades who are distanced from political intervention.
The history of our class clearly shows us that in crisis situations in
which defeat and repression mature, when political and mass initiative
and the very hope that it is possible to build a more just society are
lacking, it is essential to overcome all mistrust in order to realize
not only the appropriate ideas and the consequent programs, but also the
active and organized presence of a solid militant fabric capable of
clearly pursuing precisely those ideas and programs, for the
construction of a large unitary mass movement capable of effectively
opposing capitalism and the barbarism it represents.
This is the only guarantee. This is the first practical step to take.
