Direction: Nerea Lebrero. Author: Alba Quintas. Duration: 70 minutes.
---- I see, I see... what do you see? A small thread, and what thread is
it? It is the thread of history, it is the thread based on collective
memories of the Spanish Civil War and the immediate post-war period. In
«those who guard», three actresses take on the role of six real women
through their own testimonies of resistance to misery and oppression. A
staging based on the narrative of silences, or of what is transmitted
very quietly, almost imperceptibly, between the lines of songs for after
a war.
They were women who endured repressions that came to them because of
their condition as poor, that is, workers or peasants; Many of them were
direct daughters of the defeat in 1939. Granddaughters and mothers of
the violence of a victorious and implacable fascism. "Those who guard"
is a stage set that treasures silences, hunger, pain, wounds of the soul
and daily resistance. A relentless script that is written through loaves
of bread that crossed the bars of overcrowded prisons, fields barren of
seeds and full of mines on the outskirts of Madrid, or complicit glances
in the battered streets that were bombed every night for almost three
long years.
The lesson it leaves us is that building on defeat does not sow hope;
but sometimes it is necessary to survive in the dark walls where only
ivy grows. Defeats cannot last throughout history, nor an entire
generation, not even an entire life. Against defeats we must organize;
and remembering their stories is an excellent reason to continue the fight.
