In the framework of the trip that we made as a delegation of the CGT to
the Sahrawi refugee camps, we interviewed four women with whom we have
been in contact, aged between 24 and 28 years. ---- M.M.L.,
psychologist; A.M.L., journalist; F.A., teacher and works as a secretary
and B.A., a legal professional are the four Sahrawi women who answered
our questions. ---- What do you think about the situation of women in
the camps? Regarding: ---- l Equality: ---- M: In our society, Sahrawi
women are equal to men, we achieve this by getting them to assume high
positions and leadership and enjoy the same rights and duties.
A: Sahrawi women have
played a major role in the social and administrative structure of the
camps and have
now achieved a certain degree of equality.
F: We have full rights.
B: Despite the difficult conditions of refuge, women
have managed to organize themselves and ensure female representation
in different sectors. But we have not
reached full equality, but we continue to move forward.
l Empowerment:
M: Women are economically empowered in terms of
their management of economic projects and cooperatives, through the
achievement of self-sufficiency and economic empowerment. Projects:
farms, sewing, industry, baking, crafts... There are
efforts by the State to promote their empowerment.
A: The empowerment of women has been notable. They
have taken on leadership roles in administration, education and
community initiatives. Local and international organizations
have worked to promote it through education and skills development programs.
F: We hold high positions in the
government, just like men.
B: From the Women's Union
and the Ministry, they are carrying out multiple activities and
initiatives aimed at achieving a
society with trained women
in all areas.
l Care: family, home, dependents...
M: Women seek to obtain

adequate family education and to form a family despite
the challenges imposed on them by the asylum. They have been able to
build generations on solid family
foundations. Household chores are
their responsibilities. The mother
is the one who makes the decisions, after consulting the father, in all
steps related to the family.
In our ideology, it is women who take care of the
dependents.
A: Women play a
central role in caring for the family, home and dependents.
Traditionally, they are responsible for managing the home.
This role can be exhausting in
our environment where resources are limited.
F: We are responsible at home and we have respect and rights.
B: Conciliation is quite
complicated, we need to create spaces to address this
issue and propose improvements for women.
l Future work
M: The presence of women
in the workplace has improved lately. They are present as
neighbourhood officials, heads of
town halls, there are ministries
whose work teams are mostly women: education, health, social affairs...
They are also in high positions,
but they face challenges, the
most difficult is having their land divided into 2 parts, one under
occupation
and the other suffering from asylum, climate,
transport, the problem of work, home, lack of resources...
But we will be firm until we achieve our sovereignty.
A: It is uncertain. Many efforts have been made to improve women's
education and skills, but job opportunities remain limited
due to refugee restrictions and lack of economic infrastructure.
B: Refugee conditions
make job opportunities difficult for the entire population. The
solution is to achieve independence, which will facilitate an
environment conducive to work, growth
and development.
Your opinion on other aspects:
l Homosexuality
M, A and F agree that
in their religion and culture it is prohibited and does not exist in the
camps.
B: As a Muslim, relationships between two people of the same sex are not
conceivable. It is known that these types of couples exist, but they
have not suffered episodes of violence, as
we are a peaceful community.
This topic is taboo and we have not yet
been able to address it.
l Abuse/gender violence
M, A and F agree that it does not
exist in the camps.
B: We are proud, because it is almost 0. Society punishes
these acts that are contrary to its principles and values.
l Abortion
A: It is prohibited in our religion and culture, no one has the right to
decide whether to abort.
B: The issue of abortion is a
topic that is discussed among women
and debated in women's circles.
How do you think the situation of women could be improved?
M: Defending their rights, denouncing violations by the occupant,
preparing and supporting
projects or policies that facilitate
their living conditions.
A: Through education, job training, economic empowerment and creation
of job opportunities.
B: From different approaches,
understanding their reality and seeing their
needs and priorities. Proposals for training in ICT,
creating self-sufficiency projects, etc.
How do you value the fact that women from
other places and cultures come to the camps to live with you?
M: We are very grateful for
the visits, they are an example of
sisterhood, happy with the support,
they live our reality and our
difficulties.
A: It has multiple positive and enriching impacts, the cultural
exchange, learning and understanding from others, offers
support and empowerment. They attract international attention to our
situation.
F: Sometimes it is a little difficult because of
cultural differences.
B: It is valued positively, since
the purpose is to understand our reality and look for the possibilities
to improve our
conditions and fight with us
to achieve the main objective:
independence and return to our territory.
What message would you send to
our places?
M: The Saharawi people will not tire or retreat in their right
to freedom and complete independence,
despite the difficulties and attacks.
Our gratitude to the Spanish people who defend our
cause.
F: That they maintain solidarity
with our struggle.
B: That the support for our people does not cease and that bridges are built
to learn together and
see areas of improvement and support.
