Assad's regime fell in a few days, practically without resistance, the
dictator flew safely with his closest ones on a private jet stuffed withmoney and gold to a luxurious residence in Russia. Rather than the
overthrow of the regime and some kind of revolution, there was a smooth
transfer of power with the cooperation of the top members of the Assad
government and the local capitalist class. The civil war, as always, did
not affect the rich in any way, although they, from different and
mutually hostile factions, traded with each other and grew rich. As in
any war, the rich are safe and only the poor die and suffer. No matter
who rules them, their system of oppression persists.
Liberals and Democrats celebrate the fall of the Assad regime. Under
normal circumstances, its end and the release of thousands of political
prisoners would certainly be great news for the local Syrian population.
And they celebrate too. At least some consolation. But who caused the
downfall of the Syrian regime and who will now control Syria and the
destinies of its hapless inhabitants afflicted by a protracted and
bloody civil war? Religious fascists led by Abu Muhammad al-Jawlani - an
internationally wanted terrorist - marched into Damascus. Power has been
handed over to religious radicals from the ranks of the Islamic State
(ISIS) and others.
In the north of Syria, Islamist pro-Turkish militias are conquering one
city after another - murdering, raping and enslaving the population of
Rojava. As a NATO member, Turkey is bombing the Kurdish areas of
northern Syria, which is supported by another NATO member, the US. We
learn from the news that the US bombed ISIS positions supported by
Turkey. Israel is carrying out mass bombing all over Syria, Israeli
tanks are occupying the south of Syria. The fall of Assad did not end
the war, and everything indicates that another round of wars and fights
between states and Syrian factions is about to start, so that each can
grab as much territory, wealth and power as possible. And ordinary
people - workers and peasants - suffer and die again!
In addition, the clouds of religious fascism are gathering over Syria,
and the onset of reaction as in the case of Iran and Afghanistan. Few
believe the declarations of the new Islamist masters of Damascus that
they will leave women and ethnic minorities free and not impose Islamic law.
Rojava, one of the few democratic areas of Syria under the control of
the Kurdish Marxists of the Kurdistan Labor Party, is viewed with
concern by some. The Syrian Democratic Forces will certainly try to
resist the military superiority, hopefully they will be successful.
However, without the support of the US, they are not able to militarily
resist the tenth strongest army in the world - Turkey, which dreams of
restoring the size of the Ottoman Empire and already occupies part of
northern Syria, similar to Israel's Golan Heights. Rojava, although it
had the biggest share in the defeat of ISIS (Islamic State) in which it
sacrificed the lives of 12,000 YPG and YPJ fighters, the entire region
will be sacrificed by the US in favor of Turkey.
Many anarchists believed the fairy tale of the Rojava revolution,
although Kurdish Marxists and some western anarchists try to spread this
fiction, the sad fact remains that there was no social revolution, the
wage system and the rich class, the dominance of feudal tribal and
Marxist leaders were preserved. There is no socialism, no workers'
self-government, no direct democracy and municipalities directly
administered by popular assemblies. You will look for the application of
anarchist principles in Rojava in vain, you will find only a few foreign
anarchists who are not fighting for revolution, but for democracy under
Marxist and state direction.
There are also signs of self-governing and self-organizing tendencies in
Syrian society that are worth the attention of anarchists. Although many
Syrian anarchists are in exile abroad, they can help with the spread of
anarchist tendencies with those who are in Syria, so that it takes
deeper root among the local population and is practically applied. Their
efforts should be supported in every possible way by the international
anarchist movement, not only with proclamations, but also financially
and materially.
The outlook for Syrian workers and peasants is not rosy, but what is
certain is that history is not firmly aligned, and they have their
destiny in their own hands. It will be difficult and difficult, but not
impossible, for the original aspirations of the Syrian revolution -
which sought freedom and equality for all - to prevail in the end.
