Niterói, Magé, Petrópolis, Santo Aleixo and Rio de Janeiro, launched an
anti-capitalist and anti-statist uprising, which aimed to advance the
construction of a socialist and libertarian society. ---- It is a
historic date for the oppressed classes, because it recalls the need to
link the struggle for social and labor demands to an anti-capitalist and
revolutionary horizon. The anarchist uprising was led by several unions
in Rio de Janeiro, inspired by revolutionary syndicalism and organized
by an anarchist movement that had been advancing since the first general
strike in Brazil, the strike of 1917.

The reasons for the uprising began not only with the terrible working
conditions, but also with the rising cost of living and the deaths
caused by the Spanish flu in Brazil. The final straw for the uprising
was the death of several construction workers who were working on a
project at the New York Hotel, located in Rio de Janeiro.

Heavily influenced by the Russian Revolution, Brazilian workers faced
harsh police repression with demonstrations and street fighting,
including the desertion of army soldiers to the workers' ranks.

Dissolved by repression and police infiltration, the insurrection
nevertheless left important fruits for the labor movement and the
Brazilian working class, such as the approval of the first labor
regulation laws and guarantees of workers' rights in the country.

The anarchist insurrection in Rio de Janeiro shows a possible path to
conquests in the social struggle. Starting from the streets, from the
workplaces and from the schools, it is possible to advance through an
anti-capitalist and anti-statist horizon, in the conquest of historic
social rights and until the final victory of the oppressed classes.
